hi,
I have been playing hold'em for over a year now and have a nice collection of books, I’m now interested in learning Omaha. I’m looking for a book that will cover the basics for total beginners.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

Which variant of Omaha do you want to learn? There is Pot Limit Omaha Hi, Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, Limit Omaha Hi, and Limit Omaha Hi/Lo (also caled Omaha 8/b). There are also No Limit variations.

And what kind of Hold'Em (Limit or No Limit) have you been playing?

I think a good start for a new player is "Omaha Poker" by Bob Ciaffone.

As Doc said though, it would be helpful if you could provide more information as to what type of Omaha you are interested in playing.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I’ve been playing No limit hold'em previously.
I want to have a basic understanding of the game before I play the different variations. I think ill start playing fixed/pot limit Omaha at first so I don’t lose a lot of money. How do you decide what’s best for you?

if you are interested in the aspects of split pot poker Omaha hi/lo I believe is addressed in Ray Zee's book on hi/lo games. That book is considered the nuts on S/8 so it probably is very good on O8 as well. As far as introductory PLO books, I have not read any of them but in talking with people who have, I get the impression that ciaffone's is good and that rolf slotboom's requires background information that is included in his online articles. None of the current PLO books are typically highly recommended for anything resembling advanced play. As always the best way to learn is to put in hands and read forums.

FWIW, this is my new PLO reading list:

Pot-Limit Omaha Poker by Jeff Hwang
Secrets of Professional Pot-Limit Omaha by Rolf Slotboom
Omaha Poker by Bob Ciaffone
How Good Is Your Pot-Limit Omaha by Stewart Reuben

Around $55.00 from Amazon, shipping included. Although I might order Omaha Poker from Bob's site so that when it arrives it's autographed. Wish I did that with PL&NL.

I hope you don't mind me going slightly off topic (but I didn't want to start a new thread to ask).

Did I hear correctly that 2+2 have plans to release an Omaha book within the next year or so? I really hope so. Also, if this is correct, who would be considered the PLO specialist to write the book?

No, there arent any plans for an Omaha book to be published, but Mason has said he will consider putting one out if someone approaches him with a completed manuscript that he thinks is good enough.

Someone had submitted a manuscript a couple of months but it wasnt taken up.

Start with the low limits at some online site.

Bob Ciaffone is the best book in my opinion

Championship Omaha by Tom McEvoy and TJ Cloutier. Read my review of it here.

There is quite a difference between fixed limit and Pot Limit Omaha. Just because the maximum bets and maximum raises are pot limited, that doesn't mean they can't get huge. Even preflop. With four cards in their hand, you will find more people stay to see the flop. This leads to more multi-player action than no limit hold'em.

If you want to limit your (potential) losses, start out with one of the limit variants. And if you want to start out with a basic understanding of the game, I would suggest you stick with a hi only game so you do not have to worry about selecting a hand that will let you win both pots as is a concern in a hi/lo split game.
