First time posting on 2+2 but have lurked for a little while. I couldn't really find what books to read for beginners nowadays. I have 'The Theory of Poker' by Sklansky but I read somewhere that that was a little outdated. So my question: If you were to going to play online poker today what books would you read and why?

It really depends on the games you will be playing.

If you're starting with micro cash you may want to try crushing micro stakes by blackrain.

Tournaments maybe Kill Phil, Kill Everyone, Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker, or HOH.

You can also find a lot of usual information in the sub forum stickies of the game you will be playing.

You can also sign up for a few months of a training site for the price of a book which may not be a bad idea.
