Last Call by Tim Powers has a pretty neat plot combining Arthurian legend, strange poker games played with Tarot cards where players can lose their soul, lots of other poker stuff including trips to Commerce and The Horseshoe and stuff. good times!

A more poker-ish book that I found incredibly entertaining was Gus's Every Hand Revealed. Tons of fun.

I took your recommendation and I did enjoy it. The thriller plot seems a bit creaky (there are too many times when the I-narrator doesn't share his knowledge and his conversations with the reader in order to maintain suspense), and the poker element is ok but not as crucial as it promises to be early on: the great strength of the novel is how it captures the unromantic side of the west Texas oil boom of post-WWII. (No wonder Johnny Hughes gives this book raves on Amazon! But he's not the only one.)
Thanks for this recommendation and the one for my novel, Texas Poker Wisdom. Check the reviews of both these on Amazon.

I really really enjoyed "Tales from the Tilt Boys" and actually I am wondering why no one else here suggested it. I know it is a crazy book and it is definitely not a "page-turner" like "The professor...." is but I loved it! Would recommend it any day!

Two books that weren't mentioned: Broke: a Poker Novel by Brandon Adams and Cards by Jonathan Maxwell.
I liked Cards more but they were both decent and most poker players can relate to the main characters.
