LOL, I can try, for example this:

A lot of this was in relation to Scottyy's announcement that VIP changes were coming soon, and I think someone wrote that "soon" was 2009's May.

Not a big deal, just thought I'd see if anyone knows.

You have it right basically ,they are just continuing on from the whole "soon" stuff.

Do you know of any threads that talk about the theory of the PS Double or Nothing SNG's?

lol

Actually, I kinda like the ones I can answer in two seconds with one sentence. Makes me feel like I helped someone out while not getting trapped for twenty minutes writing a multi-page essay on some super-obscure topic that only three other people will read...

ok real n00b question:

I was under the impression that cash games were defined as 2NL/5NL/10NL because the number (i.e. 2/5/10) represents the max buy in on the table, and that this is usually 100 times the big blind. So a 5NL table would have a 5 cent big blind. I know it works this way on other poker sites i play on,but have just signed up at PS, to find that the $0.02/$0.05 tables have a max BI of $10. So would this be called 10NL? And is this standard, where the max Bi is 200x the BB?

Hi Newrat
I think at those tables it's called 5NL deep, where you are playing 5NL but are allowed to buy-in for more money and have a deep stack. I like those games, they are harder and require more skill.

The standard max buy-in is 100 big blinds but I'm not sure about standards for deep tables. When I played 2NL at PokerStars I could buy-in for 250 big blinds for $5 and at 5NL there I could buy-in for 200 big blinds for $10, at 10NL there the max buy-in was 100bb for $10. Then I moved to 25NL at Full Tilt Poker and most tables have 100bb max buy-in but some are Deep and let you buy-in for $50 for 200bb. Good luck, Yojimgari

They're called 2NL and 5NL because 100BB is standard everywhere else, including all other Stars levels.

Need Help.

I have been playing poker off and on both live and online for three years. I've had some success, but I've also had some failure. I think my lack of success is attributed to two things. Lack of playing, and some key ingredients that are missing in my game. For starters, reading these posts, half the time I have no idea what certain terms mean. For instance:

ring game: what is a ring game?

what does 2NL mean?

Finally, and perhaps I should have started here, if I want to start with $100 and I prefer no limit, what tables should start with?

Also, just to give an idea of what I've been doing, I've been playing MTT with a buy in of roughly 10-24 (mostly the latter). I'm down about $600. I realize I should have sought help sooner but I feel like I'm a decent player (or at least I should be). I've read several books, and I feel like I avoid making rookie mistakes, I just cant get past the middle stages in to the money. That probably sounds crazy given my results but I typically find myself doing well, building a good pot and then I get myself trapped in a hand, and before I know it I'm down to half my chips, then out.

Any help? Thanks and sorry for the long post.

A cash game (as opposed to a tournament).

A no limit cash game with blinds of $.01/$.02.

The number in front of or behind the NL is 100 big blinds. 100 big blinds is the standard maximum buy-in online at most stakes.

I'm posting this question here as I'm sure it must have been asked a million times, but I just can't find a beginner's guide to software.

what is the essential software to have starting out? I get the feeling HEM is superior to PT...is this the consensus here? And PAHUD seems to be the other one talked about regularly. So should HEM and PAHUD be the way to go for a beginner?

HEM has its own HUD so you don't need PAHUD which is out of date now.

From my experience PT is a lot easier to use as a beginner, everything is easy to find and set up and fairly intuitive.

Hem is harder to find your way around and the layout and menus aren't as easy to use to find what you want straight off the bat ,you have to click around a lot more (or you could always just read the instructions but wheres the fun in that!) to find where everything is.Having said that I like HEM better than PT .

Starting out I would get PT for its free 60 day trial first and get used to using a tracker and HUD with it before trying out HEM and its 15 day free trial when you have a lot more idea what you are doing .

The software forum is under the Internet Gambling heading in the Menu and the developers of both trackers are more than happy to answer questions if you need help.

Try both PT and HEM before you buy and see which one you prefer.

The other essential software starting out is pokerstove to help you develop an idea of hand ranges and how well hands do against those ranges.

From this I assume that PT does not have its own HUD. So would I need a separate HUD with PT?

You will with the old version of pokertracker, PT2. PT3 has a built in HUD.

How do you know when you have a gambling addiction? And is it safe to say that you do have when you've got "grind on the mind" ????

This is pretty straight forward, isn't it?

If you lose money you can't afford to lose, are generally a losing player, but still keep throwing money at it, you have a problem. The sites make it SOOOOOOO easy to build from nothing that you shouldn't be losing a lot when you're just starting out.

If you're a winning player, grinding is fine, imo.

These people will be able to answer this question for you:

www.gamblersanonymous.org

However, generally I think it's one of those, "If you even have to ask, you probably are.." type questions. Like, "Am I a jerk?"

There are some satellite bubble situations where this is fine/standard but generally No and you might want to refer back to that link I posted in the previous message...
