I am not new to poker but I’ve basically never studied the game. And my learning curve from just playing has pretty much been non-existent so far. I then considered to get a solver or a subscribtion to GTO Wizard, but I feel that this is compeltely over my head and neither an efficient nor effective way to study for someone at my level (obv I might be compeltely wrong with this view). With those tools, I feel like a chess beginner opening an engine, browsing through top line moves. And with real solvers as opposed to chess engines, I would also have to make meaningful assumptions myself, which seems even more beyond my capabilities.

So I assumed a somewhat structured and simplified approach might be better for me and subscribed to the Upswing Lab. I like it so far, mostly due to its simplicity. However, I wonder more and more if I am actually investing my limited cognitive resources into learning something completely outdated which is probably not even a winning strategy beyond NL10 anymore. At least that’s what some critics keep saying.

Can anyone of you guys share their take and give their opinion on what an appropriate learning path could look like?

Godspeed

What stakes are you playing? What is your experience online (how many hands/years etc.)? What are your goals?

A subscription to upswing/runitonce and doing one of the entry level courses seems like a reasonable start to me. Some things might not be necessarily 100% accurate or correct, but it gets you used to the line of reasoning, the jargon, and some of the tools used.

Thanks for the feedback!

I've been playing on and off over the past couple years. Mainly NL10 and NL25. Can't tell how many hands, but I'm definitely a losing player. However, I actually wanted to change that and give it my best attempt to learn the game. I have no real Limits in mind that I want to reach. So far the materials I use are the Lab, Dara O'Kearney's recent book, and some resources for the psychological aspects.

I feel like reading the book and at the same time trying to learn and implement Upswing's strategy is already a bit confusing. But I guess I just stick to these materials for now and stop looking for better ones. With the resulting strategy I'll produce a sample of 100-200k hands and then probably just approach a coach for a first overhaul of my strategy.

I would recommend you don't really look at a books unless it's a medium that you specifically want to utilize. Videos are much better resource for learning poker as a lot of data/graphs/hand histories cannot be as easily shown in a book.

Also most books on poker kind of suck.
