First recommendation, forget anything you think you learned from TV

For no limit cash games I find the Harrington on Cash series a good starting point as it covers starting hands, position and basic betting lines. Professional No Limit Vol I should be your next book after this. IMHO.

I'd say a book like Phil Gordon's Little Green Book is good for someone starting out with hold em. It's also available as an audio book too! Also, don't forget to look over this very forum. There's an absolute wealth of information on here and best of all, it's free.

As denks said, forget everything you think you learned from TV.

All the best

Avoid Phil Hellmuth's "Play Poker Like the Pros" for one. It contains some very poorly-thought out advice.
Without wishing to sound like a brown noser, most of the books published by Two Plus Two are excellent. You can usually work out if they are for beginners or for pros by reading the subtitles/reviews: http://www.twoplustwostore.com/twoplustwo/

As has been said you generally can't go wrong with Harrington's books whether its Live ring games, online cash games or tournaments and sitngo's he has them all covered.

Some will tell you that his 3 books on tourney's are a bit outdated but i found them useful.

I have not read it myself but have heard very good things about "Getting Started in Holdem" by Miller, so a +1 here for that book if you are a total beginner.

This site is all you need. The COTW posts in the micro forum contain more wealth of info than I've ever seen in poker books, plus 90% of the books out there are woefully out-of-date.

Whilst I agree that the COTW threads are excellent, I wouldn't send a complete beginner there. It's too much information and does not follow in any logical 'order'. Some online poker jargon can also be confusing to noobs as well as live players.

Op are we assuming you want to play full ring, live, small stakes, no limit hold em?
