I know I shouldn't play in the riggie thread, but I'm quite pleased I got away with this...

Leroy....you can never go wrong with a fender strat...probably the most versatile and natural sounding electric for a beginner who isn't exactly sure what style of music they want to focus on. I would personally steer clear of "starter packs" and just have fun asking guitar shop employees about what picks or strings to try etc. Also you can pick out your own strap that suits you rather than the cheap ones that you will no doubt find in starter packs. The only thing is you will need an amp to play it through but the resale market for beginner amps is huge and you can get a tiny 10 watt amp or so for pretty cheap. If you do go to a store to buy this stuff insist they throw in a strap or some strings or something....they usually will. If you go online look for POP offers as most sites will give you a deal if you buy a couple accessories together. It may sound weird but I'm actually much easier to reach directly by phone if you have specific questions or want to talk about gear I would recommend specifically. Just pm me if you'd like and I can give you my number. Or pm your questions

Thanks man . as of now , only question I have is : I have seen strats that were cheaper and made in mexico . i figure I can shell out around $400 to get started and i dont mind buying used stuff as long as it has resale value later . Is something wrong with the mexican ones ? i seen them on craigslist .

Not as well finished as the USA ones, but a lot cheaper. Still very good guitars imo. I have a Korean squire one somewhere round here that I never play any more.

If you don't know anything about guitars, either get a friend who does to check one out for you if you're buying privately, or buy in a shop. A lot of 2nd hand guitars really aren't worth the money, but you can find a great deal if you find a nice one.

Shops may try to upsell you, but they're not that likely to sell you a guitar that falls apart in a week.

I dont know anyone that plays or knows anything about them . what stuff do I look for ? I am pretty good at distingushing a quality product imo .

Strats play beautifully - simple as that. Really if you want good value, and you're willing to spend a few hundred dollars, and you don't already have an informed preference, you cannot go wrong by getting a new Strat as your first guitar (that way you can just get one in the colour you like from an online store with confidence).

If the lowest price new Strat is above your budget (is it $400 for guitar + amp?), then get a second hand one - there's enough around but you need to be more careful - get someone who knows what they're doing to inspect the instrument before you buy it.

Don't get a cheapo strat-like copy. They're just not worth it imho.

And if you're pushed for budget, spend as much of it as you can on the guitar and get a cheapo practice amp to start with.

I can have my boy stop by if you are in USA, he is on tour with Adelitas Way (he plays bass but used to be a shredder) they are in Vegas next week I think but he's all over the place. What a life (I'm jelly ha)

I have a Marshall half-stack I can get you cheap, it just sits in his old room and I don't play anymore. But could be costly to ship....so nm unless you are in Cali or Vegas.

I second the Strat advice, but I'm old school and would only get the USA made, even though they aren't like the old pre-CBS ones that were so pure IMO

I agree with ninja, spend on the axe and get a cheapie amp for now.

^^ only ran HM2 the once. It was as slow as ****, and showed about 10% of hands in the HUD - I had played like 200 hands at each of 2 tables and the hud stats were showing ~16 hands or something.

Looks excellent, but was totally useless
