Okay so i got into poker like 2 years ago (i'm half way thru being 16 now) but didn't rly get into it too much, played with friends and family and read some of Harrington on hold'em online but didn't take much notice of it. I fell out of the game a little as I had no chance to play it. Now i'm 16 and I am becoming obsessed with it again, nearly everyday at school we play for play money, we have weekly actual money SnGs with a couple of close friends and I play with family sometimes. I want to get good and I want to play for money, however with my age and pretty much 0.1% chance of being able to secretly play online as an adult, I can't really practice what I learn. However, I am willing to study insanely hard, take notes and quiz myself till I am 18. Is this worth it? Should I just wait till i'm 18 so i can play AND learn at the same time? Maybe wait till i'm about half a year off of being 18? So I can prime myself on the game, study for 6 months then start playing? I'm willing to study now, I enjoy it so much. I wish I could play now but, restrictions are restrictions. Plus to have a safe bankroll at 0.01/0.02 cash games, I'd need 80 and that is out of my league lol.

What do your parents think about you playing poker for money?

They are down with it. It’s a £1 buy-in 5-6 man tourney, once a week. Sometimes we miss a week.

Why not drink alcohol, get pussy and drugs as every teenager does?
Study and get a sick ass job?
Enjoy your childhood.

But if you really want to do this, just read as much as books as possible, play vs friends & family etc.
Grind the 2+2 forums and come out an above average fish for when you turn 18
Wouldn't hurt to buy pokersnowie just to practice Game Theory Optimal strategy, get your mind all scrambled and make you ask 3500 questions on here, just for you to realise you won't need it until you reach some decent stakes

Cheers.#

It's a complete waste of your time and there are about a thousand things you would be better off spending your time on.

Really, enjoy your teenage years. You'll always have time for poker and a load of money loss

Ridiculous advice ITT. You can't always be going out/socialising/playing sports/building your career.

Sometimes you want to wind down. Some people play games consoles, some people watch Netflix, and if poker is your leisure of choice that's fine.

I don't think studying without playing will improve you. It's one thing to know the correct move when it's all fresh in your mind, it's another thing to know it once you've lost your third buy in to sick coolers, have no timebank left, and now have another marginal decision for your fourth bullet.

OP if it's tougher competition you seek, why not trying the "nosebleeds" (lol) on Zynga or something, some of those people do try. It'll take a while to get there though without shelling out some $$ for play money chips.

Why not save $$ for cocaine and hookers when you're 18?
It's atleast 3% better than playing poker with 8 other sweaty old dudes 12 hours per day everyday.

Since your parents are supportive, go for it! Check the library or ask your parents to buy you the book Card Games for Smart Kids by by Margie Ph.D. Golick and see if they'll support you hosting a weekly game at your house. Make yourself a little permission slip form for the other kids' parents to sign, and have every kid bring $2 worth of nickels each time. See if you can get a student group started for play money at your high school. Once you've gotten an official student group together, choose a charity beneficiary and check with local businesses to see if they'll donate a prize for tournaments. Raise some money for local charity and get your poker fix at the same time.

Depending on the platform, free money play may or may not resemble micro/live low stakes. WSOP or Zynga, for example, are just donkey shove fests. Not terribly useful. I've found global poker to have play money games that somewhat resemble the lowest stakes.

Try playing vs PokerSnowie if you can afford it. That will show you tight GTO-ish play that will help balance out the crazy loose unrealistic play of most play money games.

Otherwise, just read Ed Miller or Jonathan Little to start, then Matthew Janda once youve mastered Miller/Little.
