I’ve recently been invited to a home game that charges no rake, but winners are expected to tip 5-10% of winnings. I understand this favors players that don’t win as often, but is it a structure that makes the game not make sense to play for a winning player? It essentially just shifts all the rake paid to the winner of the tournament and I am unsure how much of an effect this has on ROI potential.

I'm a big fan of that system. Mostly because of the kind of player who is not interested in playing under those conditions.

Definitely reduces the ROI for winning players if the player pool stays the same. But if a decent number of marginal winners quit that game things might look totally different.
