Is there any record of profit/loss for live tournaments or is it just tracked as "winnings"? Is there any record of profit/loss for live tournaments or is it just tracked as "winnings"?

I've always wondered whether or not some of the poker pros who play the live tournament circuit actually make money. I know you can look up the WSOP or WPT winnings list, but this of course doesn't factor in buy-ins. If you play in a lot of high stakes tournaments for many years, you will eventually have millions in "winnings", but I wonder just how many of these players who have "won" millions are actually down hundreds of thousands or even millions when you subtract the buy-ins from the "winnings".

I know there is a lot of staking in these tournaments so the numbers would not be exact, but does anyone track profit/loss from the major tournaments?

I believe there aren't, and that's a good thing so recreational players don't go looking at how much they're losing or realize that pros don't actually make 3 million a year

Yeah but you'd think someone out there would at least make an attempt to track this. I've read studies that estimate only about 5-10% of long term poker players are winners and the real number is probably closer to 5%.

It would be interesting to see who is actually making any money.

How would you propose tracking cash game earnings?

Or expenses like hotel rooms and airfare?

Cash games and tournament travel/accommodation expenses would be impossible.

I am only talking about tournaments buy-ins vs. cashes where results are posted (WSOP, EPT, Aussie Millions, etc.). All these tourney results are posted for everyone who cashed and there is also a number of entrants listed so you could gather that data and figure out (based on buy-ins vs. cashes) who (and what % of the overall entrants) is (are) actually profiting.
