Sold my motorcycle today, and am setting aside 1k to play 1/2 nl live. Taking some great advice from the forums and will be keeping it seperate from my other money completly.

Broke a few bones in my right hand so will be laid up for a while, got to have surgury on it monday. So I plan on playing alot of poker and see how big I can get my roll. I've seen some results on the forum where people make alot of money from 1/2 so its inspiring. The 10% 6$ max rake is going to rape me, but will not drink at all while I play, which doesn't sound like alot but easily can reach $100 plus in a session at the casino i play in.

I been playing tight and agressive, and using that image once in a while to my advantage, prolly not the best way to play but its really the only way I have experience in and think it fits my 5 buyin bankroll the best.

Another big difference is that I plan on playin weekdays and weekends. To this point I've mostly played in the weekends as seems to me their's a ton of people just giving out money. I played a few times during the week, alot of regs so the games seem a little tougher but think alot of them play bad too. Seems like the hardest opponent is the rake + tip as that usually costs somewhere around a buyin per session.

My goal is to net 1k a week, 5 buyins. Playing somewhere around 50 hours, so will need to make $20/hr average net profit. Another tip I'm taking from the forum is im going to keep records of each session, length of time and profit and loss.

Anymore tips or advice would be much appreciated.

why not play online from the comfort of your own home at stakes you can beat? you probably do better at the weekends because thats when the drunk recreational players are in the game.

Yah, if you play TAG weekends will be best for you. Also, to record your progress and work out your results I recommend an app called Poker Income, I know it's on iOS, might also be available on Android, I use it all the time in London, and I can convert my sessions into graphs. Finally of you're not in the States, maybe maximise your profits by playing online at the same time on a poker app...

Keep us posted with your progress...

there is nothing wrong with taking a shot if you think your fundamentals are good. I also think you have a good attitude which is important.

just be sure that you don't sit at the table anything that you can't afford to lose (scared money = losing)

the only thing that concerns me with your post is the weekly goal part of it. don't try and net a certain amount a week. just go and say "I have 1k, im going to play my best and since im pretty sure im +EV so as long as i play well then thats all that matters'.

basically play good and LET THE RESULTS TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES because if you say you want to win a K a week then that will not help, eg:
a. you play for 6 days and win 1.3k but then on day 7 you find yourself in a spot that will either win you a nice pot or put you down to $800 for the week. IF THIS MEANS THAT YOU START TO THINK ABOUT YOUR DECISION IN RELATION TO YOUR WEEKLY GOAL THEN YOUR WEEKLY GOAL JUST SCREWED YOU.
b. you are up a bit greater than 1k and after day 5 or 6 and you think do I even go on day 6 or 7 then your arbitary goal just owned you. IF you even think about not going then thats an indication that your goal oriented (day 6 or 7 could he friday/saturday night which should be the most profitable and not choosing to go could be really -EV)

btw how much did you sell your bike for? I hope it wasnt just 1k

OK, That makes a lot of sense. I will change my goal from 1k/week to simply building my roll to 10k. I can't play online because I'm in the USA. 1/2 is the lowest that is played in my state, but even so playing live with the pace of hands and only being able to play 1 table I wouldn't want to go any lower in stakes, if anything would like to try to work my way up to a higher stake like 2/4 or 2/5 as someone pointed out here that the rake equals out to be a much better %. I have never played that big, seems like the difference in players will probably be dramatic though as 1/2 is the lowest so it catches most players, so maybe its better even with a higher rake %. Not sure.

Channidae, I don't have a smartphone, any other software thats free that I could use? Maybe from the internet? I agree with you though, playing tag in 1/2 nl live, and showing a random small preflop bluff etc in good spots, it's hard to lose. Also if the table seems tough or it feels like everyones got my number and I think it will be hard to use it to my advantage, I just switch to a fresh new table.

I sold my bike for 2600, even though I bought it new last year was in a accident so it had some damage to it. All I'm playing with is 1k though, if I blow through my roll I'm going to stop playing. Up until this point I've just been playing once in a while, not keeping track, blowing all my winnings, forgetting about my losses. I plan on taking it serius with this shot and see what happens.

The thing that seems a little unreal to me is the rake though. I will probably end up paying 1k between the rake + tips/week, if things go well. Just seems kinda crazy. The casino I'm playing in doesn't have any perks for poker too... only for slot play. I am moving to vegas as soon as my house sells though, so if I can do well here, I know that I will be able to make more in vegas with a lower rake. I dunno if vegas 1/2 is alot harder though, or what the % of recreational visitors to people grinding are. Either way I plan on buying real estate in vegas and fixing/renting/flipping it, If I can play poker for income along with that, would be awesome.

To be honest I would be really happy if I make 500/week average playing, but like you said having that type of goal is not the most helpfull. By keeping my roll serparate and keeping track, I will be able to be honest with myself on how good I'm playing and if this will be a viable source of income for me.

Thanks for the support, going to start playing tommoro.... or maybe today. Will def post my results. Anymore tips would be great.

As stated earlier, a good poker goal is to play the current hand as well as you can.

Goals like 'I will play 30 hours per week and study 30 hours per week' are also attainable.

I personally don't like goals:
'I want to play 100NL by the end of the summer'
'I want to make $XXX per week'
I think these are more 'I hope...' than goals and detrimental.

I wasn't being sarcastic, I agree.
