So, what type of mental games do you play with yourself to keep going without tilting or spewing the rest of the day when you start off dropping a couple of BIs during the first hour of your daily grind?

I've been trying different things but would like other ideas. I find that it sometimes depends on whether I dropped the BIs due to my bad play versus just bad luck.

I tell myself that the 200 hands or whatever I just played make no difference in the grand scheme of things.

If you practice proper Bank Roll management a couple BI's should mean much. So basically what Ice_w0lf said.

I think it's more important that you change your stream of thinking.

Don't sit at a table thinking I may lose my BI's and go on a tilt.

Every session should be and is a non self weighted session, but it is not easy to forget about your last losing session.

So essentially always sit at the table thinking I'm going to make the right plays, If I win or lose is inconsequential.

Mike Caro says that you are not in a hole. You are even. You are always even.

So I always tell myself, "hey, at least I'm even". And if I need extra help that day I tell myself, "I'm a lucky player. A powerful winning force surrounds me."

I have the same problem. It is just best to take a break. relax for 15-30 minutes, watch some tv, get some lotion, help yourself out, anything to take your mind off it. You need to reset, and cool off, it's the best way

Okay, so here's the new plan:
1) Watch tv while running 3 miles on the treadmill
2) Tell myself "at least I'm even...I'm a lucky player and a powerful winning force surrounds me."
3) Slather myself in lotion and fire up PS again.

Thanks all...it's fun to hear how you handle it and gives me some new ideas to incorporate next time.

Dropping BI's is standard and like previously said about proper BR management, shouldn't be a second thought UNLESS you played horribly.
One thing that all great players have in common is tilt management. Research and read up on it. Everyone has their own method and everyone requires a different one. Find yours.

All really good suggestions. I think it's also important to review your previous hands. If you have PockerTracker or Universal Replayer then after a long (or tilting) losing streak then fire up the previous losing hands and see where you went wrong. If you can't see for yourself what mistakes you've been making, then post some of them in the strat forums.

It takes a lot of work, but if you want to get as good as you can, then it's worth it and becomes incredibly rewarding. You will hopefully see improvements in no time. GL.

I don't think 30 min is enough to get you out of that losing feeling and pushing you into tilt. Take the day off, it is better to slack off rather than lose.

yeah if you are practicing good bankroll management then losing a few BI's in the first couple hundreds hands shouldnt be that devastating. Like stated before its nothing when looking at the big picture.

Always look at the big picture.

Before starting a session after a losing session, I:

1. Do something off-poker to refresh my mind
2. Watch a coaching video (from Deuces Cracked at the moment)
3. Go trough my biggest losing hands from last session, see where I went wrong and take notes so I hopefully won't make those mistakes again.

Focus on making the right plays each time and try not to worry about results. Going over your hands can really be a good thing psychologically. It is helpful to review them and be able to say I made the right decision in that spot instead of focusing on the amount loss.

If you are losing b/c you are tilting here is something that can help your perspective for the rest of the day. Make the decision right then and there, during the session, to play 10 more minutes of solid poker just to prove you can bring yourself out of tilt. After 10 minutes take a break. It is nice to start the next session off on a positive note. That is one of the best things that has helped me, besides mental exercises. It can really help out the rest of your sessions.

This is a pretty good way to look at it.

I'm down with this program.

Meanwhile, like many other things in poker, the solution generally comes with experience. If you're like me, you'll someday realize that many of your *best* winning days started out as big losers, and you'll take pride in your ability to fight back regardless of any hits you may take along the way.
