in the simulated hand hero has Js/9c on the button on a Qh/3H/9D/7H board. So why does the trainer want hero to bet the turn 86.7% of the time yet it wants hero to check flop 65% of the time. Wasnt the turn bad for heroes hand? or is the simulator saying it wants to turn middle pair into a bluff?

I'm assuming the flop checked through and villain checked the turn to you? I'll also assume that you are the preflop raiser and the villain is in BB?

You mostly check flop because your hand is not good enough to bet. After your opponent checks turn, he caps his range and now 2nd pair becomes good enough to bet. It's a value bet not a bluff. Villain would have likely probed if he had a flush or even a single heart. After your flop check, he can't count on you betting turn so he can check-raise so he should bet if he wants money to go into pot.

Can you show us the preflop ranges? If they are wide then I agree with erniebilko, this is a value bet. Keep in mind that only a small fraction of villains range (~5%) are gonna be flushes, the vast majority of villain's range is just air.

Villain should be leading (probing) the turn with most of their stronger holdings leaving them with a very capped range when they check. Made hands are now significantly more valuable, and second pair becomes good enough to value bet.

J9 is near the top of your checking range on the flop. It's therefore one of the best hands you have on the turn, and since villain checked again, you can now maximize EV by betting for value/protection.

you also have more need for protection, since flush draws should be significantly more common
