What does this mean in limit hold'em?

Usually means raising a flop bet to get those behind you to fold out their weak draws or overcards.

4 to the flop and you are MP.

Board J76r

UTG bets and you raise with 87s. You may get gutters T9, T8... or hands like A9 or QT to fold to two bets. You are maybe still behind original bettor (with a J ?) but now you have less cards to dodge while maintaining your outs against bettor...who may actually check the turn....giving you a free pass to the river.

Depends on the players that you’re trying to knock out of the pot. If they won’t fold then you’re just charging yourself to draw.
