Hi, new here.

Just came for a quick question and will explore more soon.

So i was reading a book and came across equity. I was was reading it and doing the quiz, when i came to a hand where hero was winning.(the previous questions hero was losing, and i understand them correctly). For some reason my understanding only seems to be able to work out when hero is losing the hand.

The question was...

You are probably locked up in the mindset that equity is used to calculate the likelihood that you will make a winning hand based on your draws. But it is equally valid to calculate equity when you are ahead based on the liklihood that your opponent will not make their draw. That is what is going on in your example.

Generic advice-download equilab and run all sorts of scenerios, from being ahead to being behind. Just for fine, see if you can figure out the scenerios where you are technically ahead after the flop, but are way behind in terms of equity.

you can download equilab (free) and do these calculations yourself.

But you use the rules of 2 and 4. JJ can win if a 5 or a J appears on turn or river. There are two remaining J, and two remaining 5. That's 4 outs. For the odds of hitting an out on turn or river, multiply number of outs by 4.

4 x 4 = 16% chance of jacks winning
