Hey guys,

So I'm 25, based in the UK, and working as a doctor. Obviously this means fairly long hours and irregular shift patterns, and I'm wondering if online poker is a feasible way to make a bit of money on the side. I've played before and I'm not great but I find the game super interesting and would love to be get better, but don't want to waste my time if I won't have the time to put in the work required to be profitable. Obviously I know it takes work, and I'm prepared to put the effort in.

Let me know!

If you’re willing to put in the time to studying and practice, you can become good at anything over time. I’m getting the instant gratification vibe from your post. So, no. You’re not going to be able to be profitable at your online hustle.

Well, I think if you want an actual side oncome of a somewhat relevant amount of money (to UK terms) youre gonna have to play at least 100NL which I think is gonna be pretty hard to get a decent winrate on if you just play a bit in your free time. Of course if it interests you and you can be motivated to play multiple hours everyday after your working hours you can still get good enough to make actual relevant money.

If you're actually a doctor you surely don't need money on the side

Pretty much a 'closed' thread already.

Profitable poker does take work ... and skill ... and the right mind set. You will find out pretty quickly if you can adapt to online poker. Your ability to stay focused over long hours should be a benefit.

Not to preach, but what do you do to stay active and 'fresh'? Run, bike, rock climb, work out, art, theater ... fill your calendar with Mrs candidates?

As is the advice to most 'wanna be' Players here ... Make poker your hobby first. Make sure it's fun first. Make sure you can handle the swings first. Make sure you can recognize and 'really' learn from your mistakes first. See if your play (not results) trend in a positive direction first. Then you are ready to make a decision as to whether poker 'might' be a reliable source for extra income. GL

I like this. Then someday maybe you're good enough to consider poker a steady income, but when this day comes you'll probably be able to figure out for yourself if it's worth it mathematically in a $/hr sense. You will be able to do this math in your head no problem by that time.

Be aware that those that have been studying for the past 20 years have seen a great change in what would be considered correct poker during that time. They're way ahead of you on the learning curve.
