Playing the 'short-stack' in a turbo MTT? Playing the 'short-stack' in a turbo MTT?

Played in a live MTT at the weekend with a fairly fast structure. Down to 30 players left out of 165 runners with top 16 paid. My stack is 9BB.

Normally at this stage of a MTT my 9BB stack would be a short stack and I'd be shoving a wide range trying to chip up quickly. However, at this stage the average stack size is only 8BB.

Open-shoving wide doesn't seem so attractive now as there are lots of 4-7BB stacks on the table who would probably call off pretty light.

My question- do you adjust your shoving ranges with this kind of stack when everybody is getting short-stacked? Or do I continue to shove light and accept that the structure makes this tourney higher variance?

Is there a difference between those two? Because it seems to me that you are telling me the same thing. Btw I start shoving light waaayyyyy earlier and deeper than this, expecting to have from 3x to 5x stack in this final phase that gives me a decent edge to win; else I have gone busto way before this.

Shove. I mean, it is cool that the people with 3 BB left are calling with anything. That means you shoving wide is +EV against their calling with any two.

So anyone that is left with 9BB at any point put himself in the situation?

What if I am completely card dead and don't have any real opportunities to openshove myself, do I have to ship the 94o just because I'm getting close to 9BB? What if I had a 30BB stack and I lost a hand and now I'm short? There are good reasons why you could be in a spot with only 9BB left so it is perfectly fine to discuss what you should do if you happen to get to that point.

tighter than what? than the shoving range somewhere in the middle of the tourney? or tighter than you would shove if you would be below the average stack? or tighter than the calling range of the remainder of the table is?

Say I had 13BB and shoved 98s into a table of 20BB~ stacks. I feel I would have reasonable FE in this spot and people would fold KT, A2, QJ etc and I'd often be live when called.

However, I make the same move with 9BB with loads of 4-7BB stacks I'd definitely be called with KT, A2, QJ and similar and be a big underdog to be crippled.

Agree. Kind of. ^^ I would not shove 98s neither in first no in the second situation. But I would for example shove KT as first in the pot from MP and later in the second situation, but not in the first.
