It depends on stack sizes and position. If most players (inc you) have 30bb+ and the table is quite passive (they often are at low buy-ins), you can often limp in or call a small bet. You rarely have the full implied odds of 20:1 that is typically required in a cash game. In a tourney, luck plays a bigger part, so you have to gamble. If you can flop a set and double up, then you can build a nice stack.
Later in the tourney, when you're below 20bb, it's standard to just shove all in with any pair and hope you win a flip.

Trying to see a flop as cheaper as possible is the right play IMHO.
Limping or calling 3bet is my way to play pocket pairs.

i just play normally maybe raise a bit if a lot of players are calling so to minimise risk.. also it depends on table position and what others bid..

I like to raise with them when deep, (often folding to a 3b)

This makes yourself less predictable to good players, and increases your implied odds of flopping a baby set against them massively as they will put you on an AK sort of hand and call you down with their 2p. Also can just standard cbet bluff when over cards come, folding to any resistance.

Playing them this way however can get you in some sticky situations. Most of the time, just fold them
