Hey guys, I know this question has probably been asked by someone else but I'm giving this a shot anyways.

Studying poker, I don't think it's as easy as most people claim though.
Or maybe I don't have the right techniques?

I've recently picked up blackrain79's book 'crushing the microstakes' which was an insanely good book for any micros player and I really enjoyed that.

But when I get hold of some training videos (mostly on youtube because those are free) I doubt it if the theory they try to explain is still accurate or even good. And I wonder that aswell when it comes to old theory posts on the micros forums.

I have thought about getting a subscription at drag the bar or cardrunners but I can't use paypal or a creditcard since I don't have those .

I'm simply setting up this thread because I want to know what you people think is the best way of studying for a Micros player (10NL and up)
I know there will be people who will say that it's different for each player but still.. Are there any places on the forums I should try out?

AND OH GOD PLEASE
If anybody has some good tips for using PT3 effectively, that would be great.
(which filters help a lot or so)

Thanks a lot.

Not sure what your BR allows, but have you thought about 1-on-1 coaching with Nathan (BlackRain79)? Nothing will help you progress faster than being able to talk to a coach or other players that have been where you are to question what theories are still relevant today, what materials are best, HUD set up, hand history questions, etc. His book and Dynamic Full Ring Poker are both great, but from what I can recall Nathan's rates are extremely reasonable and if you're able to do so I would look at going that route. Coaching when done right should essentially pay for itself. Best of luck!

The theory is not different from a couple of years ago. If you watch a well thought out vid or read a good book then you should be able to beat the first few levels of the micros. The issue is study technique, not the material being learned.

Edit: i could not disagree more with the previous poster. Coaching is great to take your game to the next level, you will not learn much in a 1 hour per week session. Even 30/hour is a lot of money if you are a losing 2NL player - that is 15 BIs per week

I can only speak for live poker since that is what I primarily play...

But I think the "young kids" make a huge mistake in discounting all that "old poker books / old poker theory" and by old a lot of times they mean like 4 years or older LOL

If the total poker population consisted of 14yr olds - 23yr olds who did nothing but read threads on 2+2 and subscribe to deuces cracked then you would be right. But that is not the total poker population or even anywhere near the majority. If I had to hazard a guess, I would guess that less than 10% of the poker population fit that criteria.

The majority of the poker population (even online) are rec fish or terribad players that at best maybe read a poker book a few years ago once...

So, all that "old" poker theory and books will still have plenty of applicability.

Newer is usually going to be better (especially online). But its not like you can torch all the old stuff because it no longer applies... Fish will still always be fish...

People tend to say it's like easy to play around with filters and stuff in pt3 and learn that way.. I still haven't got the hang of it though lol.

A trained monkey can randomly mash buttons while in PT. Doesn't mean they will be a good poker player afterwards though.

CMAR or dgiharris,

What is your opinion on the value of training sites like deucescracked and CR.

I currently use 2p2, books (stuff by Sklansky, Miller, Harrington, Verneer, + more recent online ebooks on math/theory/mental) and self-study (EV calculations by hand, pokerstove, experimenting with my own ideas/strat, etc.). Am I missing out on some portion of the game exclusive to these sites not found elsewhere?

I've only seen a few DC training vids,

from what I've seen and remember in the past (its been a while since I've been on that site) I liked what I saw and it was pretty solid and legit...

The one through Daily Variance is correct. I find that it offers "one more step" to what Nathan has written.
