Poker players think they're cool, so they use lots of jargon, so here's an acronym/slang guide. Actually, this is just a link to the beginner's FAQ, posted on the top of the forum, but it seems to get overlooked daily--and hourly. You should read the whole thing, but if you only read one, read *34 so you understand what's being discussed:http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/32...ncement95.html

^^^From OP, post #1 I'd probably bookmark it. I still have to pull it up when the fancy posters get out of hand with their acronyms.

anything you are unsure about just google.

alternatively the urban dictionary will pretty much tell you everything you need to know, and so much more

not constructive, but a spot of light relief to forget about those bad-beats,

just like to say thankl you very very much, also how much use would sharpstats really be? i currently dont have the money to pay for HEM or PT3 atm and dont want to waste the free trial atm as i wont be playing too much over the next 60 days so it would be a waste.

SharpStats is totally free, no strings attached. I prefer HEM over PT, but PT does have a micros only version for $55 that you can upgrade in the future.

I'm on a podcast kick, so here's some links: http://www.pokerroad.com

DeucesCracked gets great guests: http://www.deucescracked.com/podcasts/deuceplays

Our very own 2+2 podcast: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/97...two-pokercast/

I've never checked this one out, but they seem to draw some big names: http://www.roundersradio.com/index.p...&Itemid=100025

Another one I haven't checked out either, but more huge names: http://www.pocketfives.com/podcast-archive

I highly recommend listening to podcasts. So many benefits: inspiration, hearing how pros think helps you learn how to think, and they're usually shockingly entertaining for 2 people just sitting around talking cards. I'm actually planning on weaning myself off of loud, angry music during my sessions and substituting podcasts for background noise; even if you can't play close attention, you'll be constantly reminded to think!

I just came up an anti-tilt/crash course in overcoming variance in another thread and thought it might be worth a double posting, in bold even. I still tilt (not by spewing though), but I used to be a freakin' psycho, so I'd say this is bout 97% effective:

Buy this: http://www.amazon.com/Zen-Art-Poker-...5712759&sr=8-1 ==$11 and 3 hours of reading/contemplation.

Buy this: http://www.amazon.com/Poker-Mindset-...5712789&sr=1-1 ==$16 and 4 hours of reading.

Play with this: http://www.pokervariancesimulator.fr/ ==Will shatter your preconceived notions regarding variance in 15 minutes, for $0.

Go to deucescracked, get free week membership and watch this: http://www.deucescracked.com/videos?...deo-search-box ==$0 and 8 hours of vids.

CLIFF NOTES: $27+15.25 hours invested will cure 97% of your tilt!!!

there;s an awful lot of awsome information itt, and i think it;s worth pointing out it's not always the best idea to try and make a lot of adjustments to your game at the same time. learning a new concept, that's past basic, and playing around with that until you get it is probably a better move than trying to add 3 or 4 plays to your game at once without fully understanding them.

This is a great point. I think it's best to consume all the information here a little at a time. Subscribe to the thread and come back to it when you want to add something new.

Good points guys. I personally tend to get too caught up on integrating new plays into my game and set myself back frequently.

Besides the anti-tilt stuff, everything else should be approached very carefully and slowly. I'm loving the Anthology Thread, but there's some lofty thinking in there. And while Fee's Guide is great, I really shouldn't have put it so far up the list because an inexperienced player could decimate their BR in a heartbeat if they misapply it.

We should probably approach this thread as a rough draft, then get a few minds together to come up with a methodical, step-by-step suggested sequence of consumption, once we get more raw materials itt.

So you wanna get better at poker...
Expensive thoughts you have had- Post in uNL where regs discuss things they tend to do that cost them money.. does a thought sound familiar? It's a leak..plug it.
Hey TAGfish...- small stakes poster gives you things to think about to help fix your inner tagfish.
Pot Control- pooh bah post about pot control and thinking ahead in the hand.
Things to Remember- Interesting non-strat thread about things to keep in mind when it comes to poker.
Failure, Success, and the Downswing Mindset- Written by a hu cash game player... but it can be very useful for anyone that has or will ever go through a downswing (ie, everyone)

Ahhh this looks like great stuff, by far my biggest leak, well that and not trusting my judgment. Don't know how many times I have stacked off against someone who I know has the nuts but I just can't fold for some reason. (I know it's because I'm a fish, but I'm workin' on that)

This is interesting you need to remember that it's designed for higher limits then micro's so the material might be a little more advanced (I have not got all the way through it yet)
