Didn't see this before, and it's technically wrong. "Verbal declarations are binding, and take precedence over physical actions". Usually this means if you say "raise 100" and throw out 4 red chips, they'll make you change them to greens (or whatever 25s are where you play).
I don't know what happens if you say "check" as you put a bunch of chips in the pot. You'll create a ruckus, and the floor will probably make the ruling least favorable to you. Don't mess around like this.
To answer the specific question, once you say call (assuming it's your turn to act), you are bound by the rules to that action.
