Hello my name is Art I am new to this forum and obviously am looking to start training to play poker no limit hold em. I know how to play IE rules and do very well playing against other players who have no idea about strategy (I have no idea of srategy either other than little things I pick up while playing) and such. I guess what I'm asking is where to start maybe some good books what I should learn before playing online. I am looking at playing online and hopefully winning an extra $40-50 dollars a day one of these days. Also how long does it take to learn the game.

If you expect that day to come anytime soon...you are going to very disappointed. You are a complete beginner, dont worry about monetary goals right now. Just learn the game and worry about that for now...it will save you so much frustration

Welcome to the forums! We'll make sure to let you know how long it takes when any of us have it completely figured out :-)

Just make sure to read the FAQ, the stickies, and the COTWs (Concept of the Week). That should give you a good basis for learning the game and will keep you busy for a while.

If you're thinking about doing play money, play it only enough to learn the rules/interface/program then head to 2NL to actually play.

I expected that maybe should have read that first and will check the thread you linked. To answer your question about the car not very long depending on what's wrong I took out my alternator last week never done it before watched a youtube video and did it the next day. Now rebuilding an engine may be a completly different story. I trained bjj for about 2 years now and won my first tourney 3 months ago but it took months of training to get to that level. I figure poker will be the same however in grappling I had no prior knowledge while poker I've been playin for years but not studying to compete yet.

LOL maybe the monetary thing was a bit out of line TBobLP. But why else play poker than to profit hopefully not angering anyone cause I enjoy playing as well I have played online before but have never won before other than maybe coming out 1$ on top on the 1 cent 2 cent games. I chalk it up to luck cause I haven't learned how to calculate %'s yet or pot odds which I can tell is a big part of the game. but thanks all for the replies.

I don't really feel it is out of line because thinking "I want to make $XX per day is just another form of results oriented thinking. I can assure you it is much better to focus your energy on making the best decisions you can and not on how much money you are making. This type will lead you to the money, but just remember that the goal is to make proper decisions, the money is just a by product

read a ton and use the forums. then play a little and study more. this way you lose very little or make some while getting good. get to anxious and you get to be real stuck fast.

..Son: Dad, how long does it take to learn poker?
Dad: Your whole life, son.

You have made probably the best decision in your poker career - joining 2+2. Soak up every ounce of information on this site. Now after you have read all the stickies, all the Poo-Bah posts, all the strategies, and feel pretty comfortable and confident in your poker knowledge, and then still completely fail on the tables, keep trying. When you have given all you have, and have no more left to give, dig deeper.

Poker is a mean f**king game that will make you question your intelligence, your ability, and your sanity. But it gets better. You will get better. And it's a wonderful game.

yeahhh 2+2 and other resources are great to learn the game. Playchips and real $ are completely different games. but the only way to learn is through experience whether it be someone elses advice or your own playtime.

Books are great. I really would recommend staying AWAY from play money and free rolls, it just develops bad habits and will not improve your game at all. I had no idea how to play any form of poker prior to this June and since then I have came along way, I have made a profit and will only continue to get better as time goes on. When I was starting out the Full tilt academy helped me a lot to improve my game as well.

Hope this helped
