Is live play a bit heavily placed on variance? Is live play a bit heavily placed on variance?

Since you're substantially playing fewer hands than you could be playing online.

Or are the general live players so bad that the amount of variance is negligible?

A high win rate means low variance, so if the players are bad enough it won't be too bad. Variance in poker where the players are of about equal skill is hideously large. It would be quite possible for someone who plays a moderate amount of poker to run good or run bad for their entire lives. I'm talking like running 2bb/100 above or below their actual win rate.

Depends on how tight you play. I know a live player who must be playing something like 9/7. I dont know all his earnings really, but I do know he leaves most nights a winner. His variance i would assume is very low, b/c he just plays so damn tight. I think I've played maybe 1 hand against him even though I've played with him for months, and he folded QQ on the turn face up.

Me on the other hand have a pretty high variance game. I probably play in the 20/10 or even 30/10 neighborhood. B/c I play more hands I'm in more pots with fish. B/c the fish are so loose they tend to get it in lighter. I never put my money in without having the best hand, so I'm bound to see some suckouts. My sessions will have big swings in the 50BB+ range back and forth.

I know you didn't ask for analysis but I can't help myself.

You need to raise pre-flop way more often.

This is a major leak. If you're not getting it on a draw or picking off bluffs with third pair you're leaving money on the table. You stated that you have big swings so you should be comfortable with the variance that goes along with the aforementioned plays. If you're going to play as loose as 30/10 pre-flop, you can't play that tight post flop. How often are the top 30% of hands going to make the best hand post-flop?

Realizing and accepting this is the first step to stopping a bank roll murderer -tilt. I like the way you stated this.

If you're not in the mood for any of this, please ignore me.

yeah if losing a big pot due to suckout makes you play the next 12 hands, that ain't so good

Thx for the analysis. Those guesstimated stats are purely just for live play, my online stats are completely different. It's nothing more than playing an exploitable style against fish who never take advantage of me. Raise my strong hands, limp the rest, flop nuts, get paid.

Ya, I wouldn't listen to people saying raise more. I know so many live games where it is probably profitable to limp every hand and then just raise big pocket pairs/AK. I was playing in a game where none of the good players were even raising AQ because people were bluffing and paying off so light you were basically just waiting to flop something. Easiest game ever.

1/2 Live, play straight forward nitstyle poker until you figure out how people are preflop and post flop.

then adjust accordingly. Also, limping in IP w/ speculative hands can make you so much and tilt the fish. Don't forget to buy fishies a drink and say you've been so lucky today, if you take their stack. They'll stay longer.
