Right ive played poker for a while read some books etc but have just played for fun. A tourney here a small cash game there and a high cash game there.
However i always at some point go bust (ie last week went from $160 - $1k) then lost it on a bad beat (not the 1st time but i dont seem to learn).

Now for the 1st time I thought I would now try and build a proper BR. I currently have $750 in stars (where i enjoy the torneys as cash is where i go on monster tilt).
So as ive just got RB on FT i was thinking of keeping $500 in stars for tourneys (so should save me going on tilt) and sending $250 accross to FT to start my cash attempt. With this BR would i be right in thinking I should be able to jump into 10nl or could i play higher??

Thanks

It is my understanding that the common wisdom is that you should have at least 200 buy-ins for the level that you are playing at (never risk more than 5% of your stack with one buy-in for cash games/SNGs or 2% for MTT's). You should try to buy in for the maximum, usually 100 or 200 BB. Thus, with $250 at FTP, you should start at a table with a maximum BB of $0.25 and buy in for $25 (probably a .10/.20 NL table).

BTW - this is a freakin' grind, one which I am currently experiencing. I have to keep reminding myself (usually unsuccessfully) to play within my means. However, I've found that when I am playing within my bankroll, I tend to play better just knowing that I can afford it.

if cash drives you nyts but you want to play then just start at 2/5nl until it doesn't. doesn;t matter that you are way overolled, you need to play to your skill level and don't shout if i'm wrong but i'm assuming it's low at cash?

I would say for you, at what level did you turn 160 to 1K? Stay at that level and when/if you go to 2k, move up only 1 level.

Started at 1/2 then once rolled enough moved to 2/4 then upto 5/10 where i lost it (yep i know i shouldnt have been there but wanted to have a bash. What a costly lesson that was)

If you have only had $160 you should never have been playing 1/2. You're only really rolled for 5NL let alone 200NL.

So, I obv. have some terrible math skills. I got distracted while writing my last post. According to my math, you should be playing .50/1 with no more than 12.50 at a cash table with a $250 bankroll. If you consider the full $750, you should play 1/2NL cash with no more than 37.50 buy-in.
