How far can you get playing live vs online? How far can you get playing live vs online?

I think the title says it all.

How far can you get being a live player, vs someone who plays only online?

Can you get just as far with your skill in the game? Especially in 2016?

I feel like it's almost impossible for a live player to keep up / get to the level of an online player.

Or rather, I feel a succesful live player wouldn't stand a chance against a succesful online player, especially over the long run.

Thoughts?

Pretty much agreed, although there are some live players who have a very solid online background who are killing live cash games. The problem is your game will stagnate in most live games whereas online you will always be pushed to improve and keep ahead of the curve.

If you were to take two player of equal skill you would likely find the one playing live poker would make more money as games of equal size will be much harder online than live.

Online poker however has the advantage of having more hands per hour, therefore realising your EV in the games faster whereas a live downswing can last a lot longer.

There are some elements to live play that can throw successful online players off their game, table banter, games are generally much deeper, boredom, distractions in the casino etc.

You're thinking too linearly. Both can be equally profitable.

Just because online players tend to be better doesn't equate to them always winning when they play live. Many online players have problems adjusting to the speed of the live game , the looseness many players exhibit, and the ability to hide live tells.

Though live players tend to do worse online at equal stakes as they aren't accustomed to online play

All the posters are right so far.

There are plenty of players who, while particularly good in one realm, totally fail at the other for the reasons mentioned above. For every live player who gets crushed online, I'll show you an online player that getting beaten by total donks live.

Online players are better than live players, full stop. However, many online players fail to succeed in the live arena, essentially because a) they're used to basically sitting there with their tables up and music/porn to keep them entertained, and also used to seeing weaker players as people to be used rather than to engage with (it's a ridiculous view, I agree) - accordingly, they don't talk to anyone; and the much less important b) they're riddled with tells (but frankly, most live players aren't really that good at using tells). However, the typical live player's perception of the extent to which this occurs is warped due to the number of fish who claim to be online pros or whatever.

Listening to this guy is usually a good idea. Good sense well articulated.

Thanks for the replies guys!

So, what do you think the best thing for your game is?

Is it to be both an online grinder and a live one? Or do you think it's better to just stick to one or the other?

I understand the answer might be simple here, but with Bankroll issues for live and travel times / accomodation etc, it might not be such a simple answer.

This by the way, is in regards to long term profits, which is more beneficial? sticking to one or the other? or mixing it up ?

This isn't so someone can make my mind up for me by the way, incase it sounds like that.
I have a hate for online that is slowly turning into a small like, from what I'm learning in a shorter time frame compared to live.

I prefer live because of the immersion, it's much better. Psychological warfare at the table is hugely fun, and whilst I'm not that good at it, I strive to learn to be better at it.

Playing online and becoming better will make you a better live player pretty much always. You can play so many more hands for such a cheaper price. You just need to understand adjustments for the live game. Rarely playing live will help your online game IMO, but the money is much easier

If your primary motivation is money, train online, play live, IMO.

But if your primary motivation is money, reconsider poker as the method.

I'm pretty much this right now, but add considering poker as additional income until have enough to open business.

I win live, but I don't win online. I can't adjust to the BRM good enough. In live, I bring $400 to casino, i lose it, I'm done. Online, I have $100 in that cash balance, I play $30 spin n go while tilted, and next thing u know, Account Balance: 0 . Let's deposit $100 usd, o thats going to be $145 canadian.

I play online as much as I can to try and improve and work on my game. I know I make more money live but my goal is to be the best player I can be at this point, once I'm at a point where I can comfortably beat online I'll start mixing in live for the money, but keeping playing online to keep my game sharp and not fall into stagnation.

There's not much upward mobility in either. Online someone might reach a ceiling at 50NL (or whatever stake matches their skill level), and that same player might crush 1/2 live, but his local room doesn't even offer higher stakes.
