How can someone effectively and properly start grinding tournaments? How can someone effectively and properly start grinding tournaments?

I'm a cash game player, but I play tournaments every once in a while. I acknowledge I'm not good at them (I often tend to at least get into the money though) but I actually enjoy them a lot and was wondering how I can start grinding them or at least getting better at them.

I recently won a satellite tournament to the Sunday Storm on pokerstars but pulled out of it because I figured it would benefit me more to play a bunch of small tournaments with the $11 in T money than it would to play one major tournament where I'm most likely not even gonna make it close to the money.

How I can get started grinding tourneys and developing tournament skills using that $11? I understand that it's not much a bankroll in the grand scheme of things but I'm hoping that I can get a ton of tournament experience in at the very least.

You can't "grind" tournaments. I think it is incorrect use of the term. It is a cash game term.

Does Stars still run the 55c games with the field capped at 500 entrants? I had a friend that grinded up from a $5 bankroll for those and she had an insane ROI.

I never looked but I think they at least got 50c sngs with like 180 people. Should I start with sngs and avoid mtts altogether or should I try to do a bit of both?

I believe that 180p sng are good to "train"mtt skills... It's usually were most MTT professionals began.
But i think the 0.55 500 cap are good to go too.

+1 to diana. It's been a long time since I looked at the tourney lobby, but I think the 500 cap is rarely reached, so it's often about 300 players (most of whom are terribad), so you get lots of MTT practice without having to play for 10 hours to make the FT. The 180s probably play almost identically.

I will check out the 180 man sng's and the 500 cap tourneys, thanks everyone

On another note is it better overall to grind sng's or mtts?

^180s are going to be a lot better in terms of variance than large-field MTTs, which is probably partly why they're recommended to beginning players.

No one can really answer this for you except for you. It all depends on your mindset, the amount of time you have available to devote to grinding, and your bankroll. The profit ceiling for MTTs is definitely higher, but require a much bigger bankroll because the variance is higher.

call me crazy...
but i would actually suggest the following:

learn heads up sng
then spin and gos
then 6 max
well u can skip 9 man cuz that's not real poker anyways...
and then 18 man.
45
90ko
180
etc etc

with ur cash skills along with being a winning player in those SNGs (also helps u build a roll) and actually prove that you are indeed a winning player. then attack MTTs.

or just dive right into 180s and hire Mentality135. ummm tho you wouldn't be able to afford that with ur $11 so i take that back.

lots of free vids out there. glgl

As long as you're aware of the amount of variance there's no reason you can't start with MTTs. Just don't be worried if you go several months without any returns...

Oh for sure. if OP wants to grind MTTs, I would suggest he start with MTTs at the lowest buy-ins. And yeah, that's the key is being realistic with your expectations. You've got to focus on becoming better at poker, not on the results.

Just wanted to come back to this thread and say that if anyone is in my shoes I recommend the 45 man sng's that Pokerstars has for 50c. I've played in over a dozen and have been doing well in them for the most part so far. Best part is they fill up a LOT faster than the 180 man ones that can take almost an hour to get started. I haven't dabbled with the 90 man ones but I like the 45 man ones a lot so far.

I managed to convert all that T money into actual money and then some so far, plus I still have T money to spare

^^^ Good choice. I used to love the 45 mans on Stars when I could still play there. The bubble is a lot of fun.

+1 agreed. I've started playing these about a month ago and I'm enjoying them a lot more than the ten cent 360s I was playing before. The 45s are great if you have a couple of hours to kill in the evening and don't want to risk a five or six hour marathon.
