Hero: 54

Villain: AK

Board: K 4 9

Hero has 5 outs, any 4 or 5. Rule of 4 on flop gives you 20%

If you manually calculate it you get: 1-(40/45*39/44) = 21.21%

When I run it through poker stove it is:

Hero - 18.384%

Villain - 81.616%

So my question is how can I calculate the most precise answer, as given by pokerstove for equity on the flop? Thanks, let me know what I am missing. Does it have something to do when villain improves even though we do?

Like you I suspect that most of the extra equity for Villain does come from the times that Hero improves by getting a 5 or 4 with one card but the other is a K, or an A if Hero hits the 2 pair.
As a good approx. the rule of 4 or 2 works quite well though.

I wouldn't worry to much about getting accurate calculations in game. Once they are in the ball park they are good enough.
