Hi all,

I have been switching back and forth between reading books on poker and watching poker on YouTube. I've read most of the standards poker books and guides and am now focusing on watching poker.

But I've started to run out of things to watch. I've seen most of the Main Events, nearly all of the European Poker Tours, PCAs, shows like Shark Cage and Poker Night in America. Are there other poker videos (whether live poker or tutorials) out there that I can watch, either on YouTube or otherwise?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

DT

You're talking about two things here:

1. Tutorials that teach you something.

2. Poker shows that might teach you a little but they are mostly entertainment, only showing the most interesting or dramatic hands.

If you want to watch poker shows, there are always some on TV. I have Comcast cable and I can watch, either scheduled, on demand, or both, World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour, the Heartland Poker Tour and Poker After Dark. Heartland and World Poker Tour are on seven days a week, usually late at night.

If your main goal is studying and learning, the coaching sites have a lot of videos where the pros talk about a specific subject or talk about hands in a tournament that they recently played.

I am on a coaching site that costs $10 a month and for that I can get the things in the above paragraph, and once a month I can participate in a webinar.

Another option is to Goggle certain topics. For example, if you Google something like "suited connectors" you will find videos on how to play them. Don't limit yourself to videos however. You might Google something like "check-raising" and find something interesting in a pro's blog.

poker shows will likely make you play worse, not better, as they focus either on coolers that play themselves, or hands that are unusual and shouldnt be part of standard strategy. In general, you wont learn much from free videos, if youre looking for some knowledge you gotta pay for coaching site.

What are some of the leading poker coaching sites?

Run It Once (founded by Phil Galfond) and Upswing Poker (founded by Doug Polk) are the leading paid-for video training sites for cash games today. (Deuces Cracked, Cardrunners and several others have fallen by the wayside). Tournament Poker Edge is good for tourney grinders.

Polk actually puts up a lot of useful videos for free on YouTube, but it might be difficult for beginners to tell the difference between the serious strategy discussions and his levelling/sarcasm, as Polk's troll game is strong.

An alternative is Twitch. There are lots of players (including a few 2+2ers I could mention) giving free realtime advice on their streams (i.e. some will actually answer your questions), although mainly they are just trying to entertain. Most twitchers are tourney players rather than cashgamers.

I am on floattheturn.com ($10 a month) Jonathan Little's coaching site. Like most coaching sites there are a lot of teaching videos that you can watch. If you don't play the $10 a month, you can still watch some of the videos free. If you pay the $10 a month you can submit questions or hands ahead of time to be discussed in the monthly question and answer webinar. The webinars are recorded and added to the videos that you can watch at any time.

One more thing. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get started. A lot of the poker sites will give you free stuff. Just for signing up on Upswing Poker (no charge) I got "20 rules for playing flush draws." It's pretty good. It was more than just a list of rules. It included range charts/discussions/examples for each rule.

I started with almost no money, depositing $50 on PokerStars. I told my friends and relatives that the only present that I wanted for my birthday or Christmas was poker books. I got books from my local library. A lot of those books were decades old, so I got newer ones through interlibrary loan. One of the books, Theory of Poker, was a 2+2 book, and that lead me to this thread.

One caution: Don't be sensitive about what you're told on these forums. I was shocked when, almost every time I asked a question or posed a situation, I was told some variation of "You're doing it wrong." Most of the advice was friendly, but some was condescending and rude.

In poker as in life, people aren't always going to be nice. Don't let it get to you. Being easily tilted is not an option if you want to make money.
