General rules/guidelines for betting? General rules/guidelines for betting?

Hey, after a long while of not playing poker I've decided to come back and play.

Unfortunately I am not very good, although love the game.

From the last 500 or so hands I've played since I've gotten back I seem to be losing money on hands that perhaps I shouldn't be.

For example, I'll have a really good hand, like AA. But only bet maybe 0.04 on it (super micro stakes) everyone ends up calling and I lose out to trips or something of the like.

Does anyone have any general guidelines they use for betting?

Should I be all inning here or can someone maybe give me some tips?

Thank you!

I think I'll have to read this a few times before I fully understand it. Thank you!

A couple questions, I guess.

When Ron says:

Quote:
If you are ahead of your opponent, and you think he will put more money in the pot, then you must make a value-bet. If you are behind and have no realistic chance of outdrawing your opponent, and you think he can fold his hand, then you should bluff.

Of course it’s not that easy because of the one main difference that poker has compared to other games. We never know our opponents holdings with 100% accuracy, and this is where the skill of hand-reading and ranging becomes important. You need to apply the above guidelines to your opponents range as a whole and choose your reason for betting (or other action) on that range. This leads to what I call range-targeting.
How does one know if you're ahead of the opponent?

How do you know what ranges to guess of your opponent?

If you have top pair or better, keep betting until a villain gives you reason to think you're beat. The obvious way you find out is when he raises. At that point, you should usually fold.
And don't min-raise hands like pocket aces. It's the best starting hand. You should bet at least 3 big blinds if there is no one in the pot already, and 4 or 5 bb if there is a limper. You don't want 5 players seeing the flop. You want to get heads up. Once you see the flop, keep betting until the board gets very scary (e.g. 9TJQ) or villain raises.
You need to play a lot more hands, but do a lot of reading too.
