I'm value betting the turn here. Can someone please explain the logic of calling a turned gutshot? Did I play this hand wrong? I shove river because only hand that beats me is AJ which has no fing business being there.

Thanks for your inputs.

I think I check the turn here (or bet big). Villain is going to have a fair amount of Ks in his range and you have outs which makes having to fold to a checkraise costly. Yes it let's him see the river for free with hands like a flush draw but at the same time it may encourage him to bluff those hands on the river.

I definitely do not endorse your opponent's play but he may have had plans other than just trying to hit a Q. There are many scary river cards which he might have used to bluff.

Your opponent’s turn call is marginal, not horrible. You are forgetting that aces also are outs for him, or at least he has reason to think they might be. Given any queen or ace as an out, he has 7 outs and so needs 39:7 odds, or a bit greater than 5.5:1 to call. He has 3:1 direct odds and potentially 6:1 implied odds. Does he think you will call a shove on an ace or queen river? You did with the queen, maybe not with the ace, so it’s probably marginal.

Of course the very fact that you posted this shows that you probably are being too results oriented. You seem upset that your opponent made a bad call. Why would that upset you; don’t you want your opponents to make mistakes against you?

So, what starting point should fish learn to improve their games?

I think the best starting point is understanding basic poker concepts and language along with learning preflop ranges.

This. Plus get it out of your head that an opponent making a bad play is somehow hurting you. Yes it might cost you a pot here or there, but it’s fishy thinking to be upset that an opponent made a mistake.
