Imagine the situation where the small blind busts in a tournament or sng situation.

If it was live poker the button would then be dead and go in the gap where the small blind used to be and the previous big blind would become the small blind and the previous UTG would become the big bling etc

But if it was online (at stars at least) the button would remain live and skip to the player who was the big blind in the previous hand. This means that he has avoided his small blind and the guy who was UTG has avoided his big blind. Doesn't seem fair.

Does anyone have an answer to why this might be?

Different houses have different rules.

I've never known a live casino to not make the button dead in that situation

Nothing unfair about it. Over the long run it happens all the same to everyone, so nobody gains from it, nor is anyone penalised by the rule either. It's just different.

I personally prefer playing live in my local casino because the players there are fish!
