Guys,

I am learning PLO on Carbon. Even at PLO 50, players seem to play a lot of junk hands which, with the variance in the game make it tougher (for me anyway) to win. Table selection sucks because it is so limited. Do you recommend staying the course and playing only good hands in position, or loosening up a little? I want to put time in and get good at this game-not try to be a luck box. Any thoughts/advice from you regs is appreciated. Thanks.

When I tried to learn PLO it seemed like playing a vpip of 30 was considered pretty tight, and 30% of hands is actually a lot of fricken hands by NLHE standards so I was plenty engaged and never getting bored. This worked well because it also allowed me to play "opposite the table" where my opponents were playing at least 50vpip if not more. To them it was like PLO was nothing more than holdem + 2 cards. Ultimately I quit because I hated the variance but I can see why some people would stay.

I really doubt you have to worry about table selection, there's always going to be one fish at any PLO table.

I dont like the variance in omaha either. Most of the players i play with would rather play omaha these days just because it has more action.

If they are playing garbage hands then i would just tighten up a little and extract value when you have the goods. Thats what i would do in holdem so i dont see why it would be any different. Isnt that the best way to beat loose players?

Seems like there's always at least one Bum Chapeau who it potting it preflop with A4C. And for some reason at PLO he seems to always get multiple callers.

If you realize that all that's doing is simply artificially raising the blinds, then you can adjust and play more of a SSS. Because Mr. Bum Chapeau is ALSO reduceing the value of even good speculative hands, and the flawed pockets that action junkies play with are highly degraded.

It would seem to be that SSS and PLO dont mix. PLO is a drawing game, best played deep. If someone is bloating pots without an effectively shallow stack you cant play your best drawing hands, although that may just be the NLHE in me speaking out.
