First, this definitely is possible quickly. From 75 dollars I moved up to 50NL (properly rolled) in about 20 days (just under 3 weeks, 3 days of which I didn't play because I was camping).

First, 9ptbb is a bit small for 10NL. You might not be as good of a player as you think that you are. I've found that 15-20BB is actually pretty easy to achieve and maintain at that level. Keep reading 2+2, books, etc and learn how to think like some of the better players.

I'd play as many tables as you could. So if you had 78 dollars, I'd be at 7 tables and I might even short buy into the 8th table. 10NL is all about sitting around and waiting for great hands and then value betting them like crazy.

And don't forget if you have 5 80:20 situations come up, you are statistically Supposed to lose one of those. Sure it might happen 3 out of 4 times in one session, but it might not happen for the next 14 out of 15. That's just how poker works. If you are playing under good bankroll management, then these wont bother you. If you are taking shots with half of your bankroll against the advice of everyone, then it will kill you.

Most people mistakingly refer to this as "variance". But don't fool yourself, you are GUARANTEED 100% TO LOSE an 80/20 situation 20% of the time.

So you played 3000 hands over the course of two weeks? Thats pretty low volume, not really grinding. You should try four tables of NL10 for a couple of hours each day, that should keep you busy and help you build up your budget.

Variance is when a particular situation occurs more often or less often than statistically expected to over a large sample size. In poker, variance is a result of luck. If you are an 80/20 favorite in a hand, you aren't going to win exactly 80% of the time, even if you run it 1 million times. But you will be close. The amount off is variance.

Variance != luck.
Variance != losing when you are a favorite.

ah, so this is some math geek nomenclature/semantics thing then?

Exactly: Over a million hands, it will be very close to 800,000:200,000. Nobody likes those 20% but they are Supposed to happen.

People think that whenever they happen that it is "variance" but that is incorrect (as pointed out). Variance would be if you had 100 situations like this and you won say 90 or 70 of them (Notice again: Variance is usually just as often in your favor as it is against you and so that is why we can say that in the long run variance doesn't matter).

You win at almost 10PTBB/100 and it takes you a week to grind back $50?
Should only take ~2500 hands. Just 6 table 10NL and you can get that back in 1 sesh.

Yeah to make $50 you're going to need 2500 hands at only 10ptbb/hr.

If you can put in 1000 hands per day then in 10 days you'll have 10k hands which is 200$ profit and you should be able to move up to 20NL.

If you increase your winrate, which I think is more than possible in that game, then you can get there even quicker (maybe a week at just 1k hands per day).

Moving up is definitely possible, you just have to invest the time, make the right plays, and stop blowing your money doing things out of frustration.

You most likely can't beat 100nl so you'd be wasting your time (and money) playing it. Feel better about grinding 10nl now?

Why are you playing poker if you are making no money and not enjoying it? Have a few days off.

The reason I suggested HU is that there's more action. In addition you'll learn hand reading faster because you'll see more flops. It just feels less than a grind...hell, I think it's fun

Variance is higher than 6-max, but if you single table both (with equal skills), you'll make more money with HU.
