I've run into AA a few time lately when I've 3bet a UTG raise with QQ or JJ...the villain 4bet shoved and I lost. Am I calling off too light in this spot?

This is depedent on a few things such as what limit or entry you're playing at, how many people at the table, reads on villain, etc.

Generally I'd say at best with QQ or JJ, unless the villain is short stacked or has gone crazy, he's got AK+. If the villain is a maniac I'd probably call with QQ but otherwise I could fairly easily fold this even in low limit settings or low buyin tourneys.

I'm sorry I didn't add that I'm playing 5NL...just ran PokerStove...if I have QQ and put villian's UTG 4 bet shove as JJ+, AKs...my equity is only 42.5% and the villiain has 57.5%

Then I changed my hand to KK v. JJ+, AKs and my equity is 49.995% and his is 50.005%...a virtual tie.

It almost seemsl like the hand I should call with is AA

What do you think?

Secondly, it really depends on UTGs opening range. However I will say that if I can't stack off with QQ against his range I am never 3-betting it. I have flatted with QQ against an UTG open several times.

Thirdly, when considering equity you need to remember the dead money in the pot. So once he 4-bets and you have 42% equity against that range it is most often a call depending on stack and bet sizes.

42% equity is enough to stack off? Ok. I'm new to playing ranges. So what is a good percentage of equity..and what is poor?

Thanks,

Let me illustrate it for you with an example:

assuming 100 bb stacks.

UTG raises 4 bb, folds to you. You 3-bets to 13 bb, the blinds fold and UTG shoves.

The pot is now 114.5 bb and you need to put in another 87 bb. You are getting 1.31:1 on you money so you need 43.2% equity. So in this case if you know your equity is 42% this is a fold (but it is a call if you include AKo in his range, as your equity will be bigger).

Ah, that helps. Thanks...can you share the math formula...so I can do it for myself.

It's pretty simple math really.

87 (need to call)/201.5 (total pot after your call) = 43.2%
