One of the best book(s) for beginners is still "Super System I & II" by Doyle Brunson. Some of the strategy is 'old' for sure, but from a basic learning experience this one can't go wrong in too many places.

Try to find books with a lot of hands in them, not just discussions about math and charts.

Again, a bit old, but Gus Hansen's book is basically all hand play. And even though it's a tournament you can 'see' a lot of the thought process that goes into actually sitting at a table a playing the game.

Jonathon Little is a hot author right now as well.

I highly suggest that you read each book 3 times before moving on. Once you start skipping pages because you 'know' the page from memory is a sign you can move on to the next book. GL

I have to respectfully disagree with Super System. I don't think that's going to help you out at all. If you're brand new, I think reading "The Course" by Ed Miller would be the best.

Super System is decent enough to show you how to be a poker player rather than a one trick pony, there's better out there for no excitement hold'em for sure
