Hi guys,

I'm a beginning player struggling to get out of the micros and I'd like to know what your opinions are of the best way to build a roll large enough to escape the dreaded micros.

Sit N Gos?
Full ring cash?
Short handed cash?
MTTs?
Short handed Rush?
Full ring Rush?

Gimme your thoughts.

whichever game you're best at. if you're better at cash, rush is good just because it allows you to get so much volume in which there's no substitute for

You play the micros to learn, not to make money.
Maybe your only motivation is that you deposited $50 and can't spare more money so you grind NL2 for a 50K hands because you read about bankroll management. But if you know you need $250 to play NL5, but feel you're not really learning better poker and improving your game, it's just a waste of time. Just deposit the extra money and move up when you feel you have the skill. A player doesn't solely move up just because his bankroll has grown above a certain round amount, he moves up because he feels he's getting better and ready to try the next level.

My first thought, is that if you are struggling to escape the micros.. maybe you aren't ready to play higher limits?

If its a case of solid win rate over a good sample of hands, I would drop in a few large field MTT's which are paid for via the solid win rate and hope to bink one for a solid cash to move up.

My strongest recommendation however, is simply to put the volume in to build the bankroll naturally to a level where you can move up (say at 50buyins at next level).

If you are a beginning player, I would stop focusing on getting up the limits, and focus on learning the game, developing strong fundamental skills so that when you have the bankroll to move up, you have the skills to stay there while you learn the differences.

Impatience to get to a level where you can win money that you don't feel is inconsequential is a quick way to break the bankroll.

I think you're first statement is too general. In my case, I've already learned a bunch and now I'm playing the micros to make money. I started with $0 in Jan. and recently hit the $100 mark. Couldn't afford to deposit. The next hundred will come much quicker and so on. We're always playing to make money. (Not that I disagree with most of what you said).

OP - Are you any good? What have been your biggest difficulties thus far? I find heads up sit & gos to be pretty easy. Early on during my current run I played a lot of fixed limit sit & gos and could usually win. If you don't know how to beat a $2 opponent then you still have a lot work to do.

I would play SNG's to start. Play the $10 45 man and $6 90 KO on FTP or the 180 man on stars. Learn to play patient and find good spots. After you've been playing those for a couple months, then you can transition your game to MTT's using the same ABC strategy. Finally, i would highly recommend getting a membership to a training website (bluefire poker, deuces cracked, cardrunners). I can't emphasize enough how important these are for beginners, its priceless if you put the time into it. Gl sir

imo there's a difference between building a bankroll and actually making money, if that makes sense. your bankroll is just a tool...you havent "made money" until you withdraw (obviously you technically have, but its a mindset). thats how i look at it at least.

for the OP, i'd play short handed cash games rush or not w/e is more comfortable. its generally a more steady way to build a bankroll if you're any good.
