I started playing SNG's 2 months ago with $140 starting balance. I played 100
SNG, one table at a time. I play 45man, 9man and 180 man SNG. So far I lost
$2. I have a in the money percent of 28%. I have been up $50 to down $30
in two months. I put in about 10-15 hours a week. I am making no progress
and am just churning back and forth. I am ready to give up. This is too hard to keep winning.. My best was 4th in a 4+.40 180 man SNG for $57.
I just want to give it up!

You know that most players who start out actually lose money, right?
Play less, study the game more.

If you can't even take losing $2, you probably shouldn't be playing this game. There are people that lose much much more than you and still hangs in there.

It'd actually be more helpful to know your ROI, what stakes you play etc. It sounds like you're playing WAY too many different stakes and WAY too many different types of SNGs. Concentrate on one stake, one type.

Again, more info would be appreciated.

You've played 100 small MTT which is not a lot.
If that 4th place was a first place you would have double your starting balance and not be making this post When one result can change your progress so drastically I hope it makes sense that you have not played enough yet to really put any faith in drawing conclusions from your showings so far.
If you can break even for 179 4.40/180s and win the next one your ROI over those 180 tourneys would be around 25% just from that one win.
Of course you've paid a lot more in rake than you lost in total so you are beating the other players on average - they are paying some of your rake for you.
In fact, having only a small negative ROI despite never having a top-three finish is pretty remarkable. You are almost freerolling if you like to think of it that way.

Notice I have said nothing about your play. You could be brilliant or completely **** and still have had the results you have so far.

Hang in there.

I've been playing for about 3-4 months and unfortunately I've just lost money (a lot more than $2). I'm working on my game and slowly turning it around. The fact that you're pretty much break even means you're doing something okay.

I would suggest just picking a couple types of games to play and get good at them to build some momentum. I'm working on STT's right now with the occasionally MTT thrown in for fun and it seems to be working. What works for you may be different of course.

As other posters said, you have to look at your game, not just the results.

Good luck.

You are breaking even... pretty damn good start for a beginner... keep studying, reviewing your play, posting/reading 2+2 and you should see some improved results. Focus on making good decisions each hand, and the money will come along.

I played 3+.25 45 man with 3 first places. I played 6+.50 9 man with a number of first places. I have only played 4 4+.40 180man SNG and came in 6th and 4th. Also I play mostly turbo's. The highest I played was 6+.50.
I tried 2 tables at a time but it is too confusing to watch the action. I am
only in about 18-20% of the hands.
Thanks for the reply,

Also what site are you playing on, if Pokerstars you are racking up the FPPs with your rake. So even though you are a VERY slight loser you are making up for it in FPPs.

If not Pokerstars switch to a site with rakeback as you can get 27% of your rake returned to you, so for every $ you spend on entry fees you get .27 back ideally. Which in yourcase if you continue could be alot. Especially if you learn to multitable.

For multitabling I suggest just adding one table at a time. Play on two tables for like a month...then try a third table when you feel like it. By practicing like this you can work your way up to 10+ tabling, which is great for FPPs. Although it may be hard now it is well worth the effort

That sounds like you're doing pretty well actually. Put in a LOT more volume and reevaulate then. I played 100 3+.30 sitngos yesterday so don't get too discouraged yet.

I agree maybe you should redraw your money and find something more suiting for yourself.

There are plenty of poker players - more than a few of them on this forum - who'd love to report that they're pretty much break-even after their first two months of playing.

OK, so you haven't made your first million $ yet, but I still say your results are pretty decent.

If you enjoy it, keep doing it.
If you don't enjoy it, find something else you'd rather do.

Don't sweat too much about making big $$$ at this stage. Instead, put most of your mental effort into thinking/learning about the game. The strategy forum for the particular game(s) you're playing would be a good place to start.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the help!
I was starting to loose my patience with poker. I was thinking of moving up to higher level of SNG,s with my $138 in account at stars. I though I would go for broke with some $20 9 man games. You guys have encouraged me to stick with it at the lower level and just study my play. I will stick with 6+.50
and less now. Maybe I will win $2 in the next 2 months.

Def. less, unless you don't mind redepositing. If you'd rather not deposit again, start with the 1.10s/1.20s... show a profit over a decent sample, then move up to the $3s.... proceed from there.. gl in sticking with it
