what experience with online do you have?
what are your ultimate goals?

You'll have to decide whether you prefer no-limit, limit, stt, mtt, or whatever. It's more a matter of personal preference.

unless you are a seasoned veteran at this, I suggest depositing only $500-1k and playing something like .10/.25 no-limit (25nl) or a rough equivalent until you establish a track record. start on just one table/tournament, and add one or two once you get comfortable, contingent on actually playing well on all tables. When your goal is to get better and move up, you should play fewer tables. when your goal is to maximize hourly profit at a level you know you can beat, play more tables.

5k is nominally an adequate bankroll for a winning player at levels much higher than 25nl, but if you are not winning at those levels, no bankroll is sufficient. So I think you should make a distinction between your actual bankroll (the 5k you are willing to invest), and a smaller playing bankroll that you use to assess your progress. Many of us make a smallish deposit -- 1k would be on the high side -- and call that our "bankroll".

for cash no-limit holdem, 20 buyins is a good "bankroll" to maintain. Use a bankroll management scheme to help you determine when to move up/down in levels, and stick to it. Don't think that moving up or down is a direct reflection of your skills. With only 20 buyins, you'll be moving solely because of variance sometimes. At the same time, this forces you to be realistic about how profitable you are at different levels, without requiring you to play an insane number of hands to establish a winrate.

I made a post recently here with more detail. bankroll managment is a popular topic in this forum. do a search and you'll find lots of opinions. Pzhon wrote some of the best info, including this post which calculates some baseline bankroll levels needed for various forms of holdem.

I think 25nl is a fine place to start. You may not beat this at first, and find yourself at 10nl or 5nl while you get your feet under you. If you think this is pathetic based on live games you beat, note that online is regarded as much tougher at the same stakes. there's just no sense in risking the 5k right out of the gate and trying to master online poker at $1/$2 no-limit. If you crush 25nl, you can put yourself on an accelerated advancement schedule.

oh, very important: do not deposit anywhere besides pokerstars without reasearching rakeback first. Pokerstars does not offer rakeback, so it doesn't matter with them, but everyone else makes it difficult or impossible to get a rakeback deal once you've made that first deposit. someday you'll REALLY want rakeback.

i agree with the cash out 4000 and play with 1000... if you haven'at proven yourself to be a winning player at 50nl.. and are just jumping in head first your going to get crushed at the level you are rolled for... in fact i would cash out 4000 and start at 25nl until you know you can beat that level.... then and only then would i hit 50nl..
