If so, how do you succeed?

I had my first experience doing a turbo tourney today (the hourly WSOP satellite freeroll on pokerstars) and found that after just 20 hands that the blinds were high enough to put people whose chips were around the starting chip count's (1500) M at 5, making all-in-or-fold bets the way of playing*.

If someone sees the flop 20% of all hands, that basically means they have four hands in which to double their money in order to have a reasonable M to make proper play feasible for, say, 10 minutes, and even then they'll likely be going up against other desperate players willing to go all-in to save their stacks, making early position play difficult to do, as you're always thinking that someone will just re-raise all in after you.

I managed to make it to the top 25%, but toward the end was constantly forced to make all-or-nothing bets and hope for the best.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

This is the bread and butter of Turbo SnG's. Basically the idea is to put yourself in positions where you can push all your chips in the middle against individuals who are unlikely to be able to call based on their card values. There's a STT forum found here http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/forumdisplay.php?f=36 that may help you gain more insight.

Since moving away from turbos, I've tripled my ITM rate, and I'm a self-admitted NIT, so take it fwiw. You're actually probably playing the optimal strategy, but you'll probably find yourself on the bubble with a low stack quite frequently. That's the time to start attacking using high blind aggression to exploit bubble passivity. Best advice is to stick to what you're doing but open up your bubble play more by attacking the blinds relentlessly and shoving on timid players, putting their tournament life on the line.
