Advice for starting poker in 2023 Advice for starting poker in 2023

Im 21 years old and just got introduced with poker, i feel like i have pretty decent understanding of basic math and logic behind it , i got 10 out of 10 on preflop quiz and basic math quiz on Upswing hah. But i feel like everyone is saying there is no chance to start at micro level in 2023 and build a roll and get to for example NL100 or midstakes tournaments, basically everyone is saying work and play midstakes live from begging. But in country where i live that is not possible, there is no that much live games, and there is no chance of building a roll like that.

My question is, is there a chance that someone with for example 100$ builds a roll on for example GG or other sites in 2023, or just no chance in todays online climate. And my question would also be what would be advice from experience online players or players who made/beat micros and build a roll in 2020s, sites they would choose, approach (MTT, cash) , etc, everything will help. Basically im trying to find reasons for/against wasting time on poker. Thanks everyone in advance.

I would disagree as a guy who's currently doing just that. I came back to cash in Oct 2022 after 15+ years playing MTT's. Other then struggling for volume because of my busy life I'm beating full-ring 2nl tables at Pokerstars. If I had to do over I'd probably start at 5nl not 2nl as they both play seemingly the same. Also just my opinion but if one isn't good enough to adjust and beat micro/low stakes then he has no business thinking he's good enough to play higher, adjust and beat that player pool.

As for wasting time on poker. If you enjoy something and have fun doing it I don't really think it's a waste of time specially when it's something you can win a bit of money at over the run of a year. Even winning at micro stakes it can build up all while doing something you enjoy.

Besides poker is more of a marathon then a sprint and it honestly doesn't matter where you start.

EDIT: FWIW here's what I'd do. Get together about $200. Then get a HUD(Poker Tracker 4) even if the site you play doesn't allow a HUD. You can PT4 when not playing to review hands and study. It also has a great piece of software called "leak tracker". Which basically is like your own personal coach. It will tell you where you game/hand needs the most work. ALso Peter Clarke's course "From the Ground Up" at runitonce poker is worth the price $50usd. Take the rest the $200 and make a deposit.

Cheers!!!

I usually recommend people start at 5 or 10nl, which will have slightly less absurdity than 2nl but is still pretty affordable. Starting at 50 or 100nl is a recipe to get crushed and should only be done if you understand that you'll lose a pile of money and have no interest in playing micros.

You can build a roll at micros, but bear in mind that at 5nl even a decent player might make $1-$2/hr, so it's slow going. The games are beatable, but it definitely takes hundreds of hours to get anywhere.

If you want to get anywhere playing poker, it will realistically take hundreds if not thousands of hours of grind and study to do anything substantial. Hardworking players putting in solid effort can get to pro-level in a couple years. Casual players can become small winners in some months to a year. Because of this, it's important to pick a format that you find interesting and enjoy playing and studying. It's possible to make decent money playing nl cash, mtts, spins, plo, whatever. But if you get bored and lose interest after your first 200 hours, you won't get anywhere in any format. Find out what interests you and follow that.

Thanks for your replays, is GGpoker decent site to start, i think of depositing 100$ and play first hands of online poker in my life. I have been reading that its better to play normal tables than zoom and that usually winrates are bigger, but i thought is fast poker better because of volume, but since i really dont know if im beating anything maybe volume is not what i should be worried about. My goal is to play and take shots at nl5/nl10 when i build 30BI for level. So 150 i would take shot at nl5 if i lose like 50$ i get back to nl2, and like that.

I would look into buying this ground up course or something if i make it from poker, i kind of think only using poker winnings for investment in poker. It looks to me like a sensible thing to do. And if i can not use my logic and this forum to beat nl2 and get up to nl10, its maybe not for me. I really dont know what to expect.

I watched and read ton of free content online, but its hard for me to know what this info is, it looks logical, i watch videos of players playing fast formats and explaining, seems logical to me, and i stop videos and think first what i would do and why and more than often its correct, but i feel like i got ton of information without playing single hand online.

I can't speak for cash tables at GG poker. I did enjoy GG poker Tourney', their staking system and the site overall. God I wish Pokerstars had that I enjoyed staking guys when I didn't have the time too play myself and offering stakes in yourself can really extend the bankroll. Won't need the HUD right away at GG poker as they don't allow you to use a HUD. I would still recommend PT4 down the road though it's still worth the money specially where you plan to study and improve.

That's an excellent way to look at it man in RE to spending profits to improve and what of I've done over the years even though it never was a goal to make living playing poker. It is nice to have a hobby a enjoy while making a bit of side money every year. Most people today a lot of money doing their hobbies.

Well then the only thing left to do is make a deposit and get started I guess lol. I know I know what you're thinking easy to say. Even with all my 15 years MTT experience I can't say I wasn't a bit nervous and not quite comfortable when I first came back and sat down(I was). Whether you start at 2nl or 5nl just sit down and play straight forward ABC, TAG poker and get a feel for how the player pool/each table plays and bets. The hardest part for me was the first 5000-7000 hands after that I started to feel pretty comfortable and have a pretty good feel. With that said each table is different and some can be pretty insane at 2nl.

Good luck with your journey and have fun if nothing else poker is a hobby a guy can make a bit of money at if he has a bit of patience and plays half decent. Can't say that about many other hobbies.

Cheers!!!

So i made a start plan. GG poker will be the first site. I will deposit 100$ if everything goes right today. I will play rush or fast version of the game. First 2 tables than hopefully 4 over few months. I will use 30bi rule to take shot on higher limit. And see how bonus/rakeback work. I will also ask and listen to advice of experience players on this site. And i will look to post hands in hand sections white my thinking process.

If im advised better site i will of course try it. This Gg is simplest and im without thos programms so its + if gg does not allow them.

I heard rake is big and its problem to beat games without good deals . Have to see for myself

Isn't there underground games in your country? Could make a good Goals/Blog thread playing against some gangsters. Also just play 1 table and focus.
