10,000 is a pretty small sample. People can run super hot or ice cold over that amount of time.

I dont know about anyone else but i ran hot for 10k hands, then reality hit and my actual poker level /skill was showed for the next 80k hands lol. I did get to move up to 50nl now tho. just lots of hard work and frustration.

How many hands would a good sample be then?

If your still winning at ~60k hands, that should be an indication if your a good player or not.

It's irrelevant without a frame of reference really. Someone could say "$4000" but if they played $500/$1k, they're only winning ~.02 bb/100, so it's not that impressive. Someone else could say "$80" and if they played 2NL, they'd be crushing.

The only important thing is bb/100, since dollar amounts are relative to the stakes you play. If you're winning around 5 bb/100 over a decent sized sample (20k at the minimum, 50k to be reasonably sure), you're doing good.

Yea but beating 500/1K for .02 bb/100 is IMO way more impressive than crushing 2NL.

Ah, but winning $4k at 2NL is much more impressive than doing it at 500/1k.

Winning $4K at 2NL is more sad than impressive IMO ... especially if you never tried to play higher. That just means that you played 2NL way too long.

What would you have to play? Like a million hands even at a winrate of 10PTB/100 hands to make $4K at 2NL?

Yea that is right, it would be a million.

10,000 hands definitely isn't enough to determine if you're a winner, but it's a pretty good indicator of what your long-term stats are going to look like. Leaks can often be found by having others look at them.

It's pretty insane how many hands it takes for you to find out if you're good - or, rather, that you have a positive winrate. I've always loved looking at this calculator and editing values to see what comes up. For example, even though I'm about a 2.6BB/100 winner at the 6-max LHE stakes I play, I can only say that I'm a winner with 97.5% confidence over ~24000 hands. Math is scary.

Anyways, use the above link for fun if you want, but know that you shouldn't overly focus on results. Concentrate on playing a solid game, studying, posting, learning, etc. to improve your game instead.

I started playing late december 09 and have so far played around 40K hands. Not a lot of hands for 3 months some would say, but with job, family, house to fix etc. etc....
Anyway, for the first month I was down $100, next month $280 (accumulated), and by mid march I was down $380 in total.

The last two weeks have brought a change. Things have started to fall into place in my head and I have managed to play some pretty decent poker @ 4NL, keeping myself even for the month.

After the first months trying out a lot of things, making stupid bets and even more stupid calls, shoving with the wrong cards, moving up way too fast etc etc, I found kind of comfort in the game now. And this is why I am hopefull about keeping my solid game together and advancing from here, and mabye start making money instead of loosing them. However, I'm still prepared to take loses on my way to become a winning player (if you see some of my hand posts, you would see why I should be prepared to still take loses...).

So, if you're posting because you feel you should be making money after just 10K hands, don't give up. IMO, It's not realistic for most ppl to have a good winrate after so few hands.

Play
Post hands
Take criticism
Adjust
Play more hands etc

Good luck
