If I am up a significant amount before the hands are done, say $200, I might just take the win and clear the 5 hands betting small because the max EV strategy is very high variance from there and doesn't add a ton of EV to the overall strategy since I'm already in a low frequency branch of the tree if I'm up a lot. As my bankroll grows I'll be more ok with riskier strategies though if they earn a couple bucks more EV.
Interesting. I'd be interested in knowing the max EV strategy for a game like this, but at the same time it's such a good bonus that it's hard to screw up. The way I've been doing it is to go $10/hand for the first 4 hands, then on the final hand bet an amount that if lost would leave me down $50 if it loses (assuming no doubles/splits, I'll eat the risk on those). Today was rough as I was up $50 through 4 hands, so put $100 on the last one and busted.
I've been playing the atlantic city version which offers a surrender which makes me wonder. I am almost positive on the last hand if I get a 16 vs. a 10, it's better to hit and go for max win/max bonus, than it is to surrender and only lose $25 and get the $12.50 bonus. Either way I'm enjoying the crap out of this free EV. I can't imagine it will be around forever.
