The thing that really got me thinking was the fact he offered 'coaching' for $50 an hour. I mean come on, you're a big shot rich guy with a sick system and you're charging the same amount computer fix it guys would?

This guy is flat broke and ran a terrible scam. Hmm, I wonder if the two are related!

ArturiusX, you NEED to ban jokers like this. It's impossible to take money away from Pro Traders using Grade 6 math.

Any legit Pro Trader can tell you 2 things in 30 seconds:

(1) Exactly what ** market inefficiency ** he is exploiting.

(2) What ** competitive advantage ** allows him to do this.

It these 2 points...
Cannot be clearly explained in < 100 words...
Then one is dealing with either (a) an idiot or (b) a fraud.

In this case it's both.

Why ban them when its so much more fun to discredit them and exploit 2p2's page rank so everytime someone does a background search for them, these threads come up?

Why would he come back, he's been completely owned and has no comeback right now. He'll just find another message board and start from square one. Except this time, this thread comes up on a google search!

Man, I love this guy

"After experiencing the positive results delivered by API, I decided to write a book; Serious Money Investing so I could share this new investing paradigm with the world and be credited as "the father of automated process investing.""

http://www.amazon.com/tag/investing/...x2ICEOYG287YL5

All of his crap has had some benefit however - I've been looking at how to code a whole bunch of trading systems.

Buying 10% more on a 5% dip and selling 10% with a 50% gain seems to beat buy and hold for the s+P.

but that's irrelevant, of course, since it's all in hindsight - what is interesting is what works with a randomly chosen etf, without cherry picking.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. This only works with infinite funds. For example, buying 10% more on a % dip and selling 10% on a 50% gain means you have a maximum drawdown of $4.4 million dollars (for 10,000 1950 shares - compare with $0.16M for buy and hold.)

If we are allowed infinite money, then why not simply buy infinite amounts of s+P shares every single day? that's the optimal strategy

I am going to try the following, more realistic, experiment. It will be harder to code, but should be pretty fun - I'm learning a lot here.

Assuming we start in 1950 and we have $10 a day to invest (with the amount increasing based on published inflation figures, so that would be about $80ish today - I'll get this data from the CPI) and we use the dividend-adjusted day end rate of the S+P, which strategy makes the most money?

This helps solve the "infinite money" problem above.

Can anyone suggest further criteria before I get to work coding this thing? Once I get it working, I plan on trying every variant of the buy and sell amounts and percentages possible to see if any of them beat buy and hold.

If some do, I'll backtest against other etf's and other indexes (FTSE100 for example) and publish results.

Is there anything I should consider before I start?

EDIT: I should probably account for transaction fees somehow, perhaps by only buying stock in multiples of 10.

Exactly.

His system is so flawed for so many different reasons, it's ridiculous. You literally need an infinite amount of money if they market keeps dropping since, according to the system, you need just just keep buying 10% more of it every time.

Sharpie, you are using “funny math” or something here is why:

You state:
Here is the data on all the trades you would make under his system:

4/18/1950 SELL 1000 at $18.03per share. (18030.0)
7/12/1950BUY 900 at $16.87per share. (15183.001)

Now; notice that Automated Process Investing Rule #2 states if it drops by 5% you buy.

Now, if the target price is $18.03 per share (the price indicated on 4/18/1950) …I believe that 5% of $18.03 is $0.90. So $18.03 minus $0.90 is $17.13…NOT $16.87, as you claim. So since your calculations are all wrong. Your results are off as well – sorry you spent so much time trying to debunk my system.

Perhaps you should start with n easy calculation like 2 + 2 = 4. And …ehem work your way up from there from there.

but in reality that shouldn't matter that much. not to the effect of 800% difference!!

and what happens when the intraday is TOO FAST for the system? i.e. you have a limit order in at 5%, but if it falls from down 4% from last sale to down 8% in 2 trades, you'll miss it entirely and your limit order will never get executed. if you have a market order, you obv get raped constantly

so net/net, the EOD shoudl be FINE as there are also HUGE positives to this. could you really count on getting EOD prices first thing the next morning? we've given this system that ability.

so there is really nothing wrong with sharpie's test from what i can tell.

I have a feeling that the only reason you finally got some math right is that that you recently used this exact equation to calculate your total book sale figures.

My thoughts exactly. Of course, if anyone seriously thinks it will make a difference, I can use the next days open to buy at - as I mentioned earlier, it was a quick 30-minute hack to see if his system deserved further exploration.

It doesn't. He cherry picked the best possible ETF's and the best possible date ranges. It seemed fishy when he picked moderately obscure (in comparison to, say, the S+P) ETF's as examples - running more common data through the system shows that it's simply awful.

His system also assumes you have infinite cash on hand at all times, and you can always trade at the values he suggests using limit orders (when, clearly, you cannot).

I'm just amazed that 30 minutes of our time was all it took to disprove a system based on "6 months of research" from "the father of Automated Process Investing".

NOTE: Despite the fact that I am being condescending to the good doctor, if anyone seems a legitimate problem that would seriously change the results of the code I wrote, please let me know - as I mentioned, it was very amateurish and it's pretty likely I missed something.
