You can't buy "gold" on the NYSE. If you are looking for an exchange-traded fund that tracks the price of gold, you can look up GLD which is the most popular, or check this listing of Gold ETFs:

Gold trades on NYMEX code GC (Z8 for 12/08)

look it up on www.ino.com, gives futures and cash prices
