Just looking for a basic definition of swing trading compared to say trading. And if anyone knows what kind of salary swing traders make compared to day traders.

Thanks

In basic terms swing traders hold overnight while day traders don't. There's a lot of crossover though where swing traders make some intraday trades and some day traders occasionally swing trade. Most guys that refer to themselves as day/swing traders aren't salaried, but as to earnings it can vary wildly. Obviously the really big hedge like money is made in longer term holds but the biggest numbers I've ever heard on individual making have been intraday trades.

It's salary.

Also the average salary is not negative, given a salary is what employers pay to its employees regardless of performance.

Wow, you're a sharp one!

Regardless of how you account for it the average return on trading is negative. Neither you nor OP strike me as likely to fall above the mean.

How does my ability to correct your useless and incorrect points cause you to make a decision on one's trading ability? Although I wish your "striking instinct" was more on point, I happen to fall very far above the mean in pay and trading returns. Best of luck.

This isn't completely obvious as it's not zero sum (or negative sum). You could have a simple strategy of buy at open, sell at close, and basically track the market (obviously some difference with opening prices not matching closing), and fees, but you aren't going to beat the market with this.

Nights and weekends matter. And with the shiller PE > 25 returns will be zero for a couple decades anyways.

If it was advantageous to hold over nights and weekends, you could be a reverse daytrader and profitable by buying at close, selling at open. There's virtually no way that gives you any kind of advantage (otherwise it would be exploited and is incredibly simple), therefore it's fairly arbitrary ofa time period. Obviously fees matter, but it's not "obviously" negative as an average.

I would say traders as a whole are profitable, but 99% of the profit is going to 5% of the people calling themselves traders

A swing trade is a day trade that went against you but you are sure will turn around tomorrow.

Obv one requires you to be flat at 4pm. Different skill sets are required IMO. You also have to throw FA out the window. Which for some of us is our go to move.
