I am currently enrolled in a Strategy/Innovation Master's program and working in strategy consulting. I find both things increasingly boring and am wondering which path I should take. I am posting in the BFI section because it seems that many people in here have a lot of experience and insight to apply on my situation.

Background: I have a Bachelor's double degree in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. I have 5 years of experience in designing web sites and have no problems finding work in that field, but am not looking to make this my full time job. I am pretty good with numbers, enjoy solving problems and have recently attained a high GMAT score with little effort.

Here are some (non-exhaustive) options I have identified:

1) The obvious: Continue working in consulting and finish the Strategy/Innovation Master's program. Postpone the decision on what I really want to do.

2) The shortcut: Start an IT service company right now. Find a small team of good developers and start off by creating web sites. Try to pursue other projects once the team is established.

3) The geeky: Get a technical Master's Degree (computer science/mechanical engineering). Get a work experience in that field and then either pursue an executive position later on or go to 2)

I am very interested to read what people with different backgrounds and experience think about this. It is very likely that I missed out on some important information in order to keep this initial post rather short - please let me know.

Can you describe the extent of your web page making business right now? Some people have a knack for finding quality clients and they tend to do very well. So I would lean to #2, but it's not for everybody.

And I don't see how this is stopping you from finishing your Master's. You should be doing that as default, so that you have more options later.

When you finish your Masters, you can look at what you have with your IT business and compare that to any jobs you are pursuing.
