I'd really like to open up a bank account in the US, but am not a US citizen.

Is there a legitimate (and administratively easy) way to do this?

I do have a 1042-S form where I've paid tax to Uncle Sam on WSOP winnings - is there a unique reference on there that could help?

Thanks in advance

Are you a US Resident?

Nope.

Then I expect you'll have quite a difficulty. Most US banks won't give me an account as a US citizen once I escaped -- err left.

Have you asked a bank for guidance?

You need a US tax ID, which you can get by phone. (Look at irs.gov for info.) You also need a US address, though you do not need to be a resident.

They are strict on both of these requirements to combat money laundering and other nefarious activity.

Individual banks may impose additional requirements. Talk to a representative at a bank in which you are interested.

Given your name I doubt this will help but some Canadian banks (Royal Bank for example) can open a US bank account for you (they actually own a US bank and then make it easy to transfer funds to/from it). Not sure the requirements but at the very least I suspect you need to be a Canadian resident.

Possibly something like that in Australia but I would doubt it.
