How do charities distribue disease-research donations? And what if they find a cure? How do charities distribue disease-research donations? And what if they find a cure?

Lets say one hundred million dollars is donated to a charity to research a disease. Lets say cancer. How do charities generally divide up the money, after covering expenses? Do they give it to private Pharmaceutical companies, that have experience researching disease? Does it go to public universities for them to research?

Let's say 100 million is donated to a charity, and they give the money to a University to find the cure for cancer. Let's say the university does it. What happens to the drug patent, since it was a public university, using donated funds? What if the charity gives the money to Pfizer or some other drug company, and they find the cure for cancer. Does the public get 100 million worth of free cancer treatments, or does pfizer get to keep all the profits?

I think you're misunderstanding the word charity.
