Contribute the maximum to tax-advantaged accounts, and hold any dividend and interest paying assets in those accounts, so your brokerage accounts might only hold stocks without dividends or ETFs with automatic reinvestment for example.

What about riskyness

Riskier things that I don't want to hold for years in a Roth and buy and hold stuff like s&P in just a regular account ?

The S&P pays a lot of dividends. You should have it in your Roth.

For analysis purposes, I would like a way to determine whether a given stock is "easy" to short. Where can I find this information?

You check with your broker.

Once you ask your broker where they keep the list on their website, write a program to pull the tickers off of it.

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but does anyone have any thoughts on the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation while on a career path towards CFO? I'm at a point at my job where any subsequent promotions will be discussed by my CFO, CEO, and BOD so I'm trying to proactively remove any road blocks. One of which will certainly be my education (BS Econ, BS Psych).

Out of the CPA, CMA, and CFA, the CMA curriculum is the best for what I will be doing over the next 5 years. It is also by far the easiest of those three designations to acquire. It is also by far the least recognizable and least valued in industry. Because of my education the CPA isn't really an option. The CFA is really only tangentially related to my work, and while it would probably be more valuable in the PE/VC space, I'm not sure how much value it adds at the Director/VP of Finance level. So by process of elimination the CMA looks like the best fit, but I'm concerned that it wouldn't do enough to fill the void left by not having an advanced degree to be worth the effort.

Capital gains tax, and the rules involved with it are obviously a major factor and don't know how to adjust my strategy

It's difficult to provide any advice without knowing more details about your investment objectives, your investment time frame, your risk profile, and a few other criteria.

Similarly, a new poker player asks you advice on a hand and want to know if he should call or fold. A great player has to go tons of variables before making a decision while a novice player just want to know if he should call or fold.

I have a high risk tolerance

My goal is to grow my money as much as possible (obviously)

I'm in my late 20s
Single

I am assuming I'll want to use the money to by a house by the time I'm round 35

But who really knows

I feel like a lot of us on this forum are in similar spots

If you have any more specific questions let me know

Too specific for this thread fine

I just want a general question discussed

How do taxes effect a buy and hold strategy

What types of things are better off in a Roth and what types of things are better for a 5 year window based on taxes

Most people would advise holding income producing assets (bonds, high dividend stocks) in a tax deferred account. A tax efficient stock mutual find can be held in non tax deferred account with little impact.

Tax decisions tend to be less critical with a buy and hold strategy then it is for someone who trades a lot and realizes a lot of gains.
