Also, if my laptop died and I had my backup wallet, do I need to download the entire blockchain again(85 GB or something!) before that wallet can be verified? I haven't seen a lot of great explanations on the internets about restoring from backup, etc.

go to bitaddress.org

click paper wallet

bip38 encrypt. enter a password you will remember. hit generate.

hide art, since no need, but if you like the artwork then have it too.

It will give you a password encrypted private key and a public key. print it out.

send funds to the public bitcoin address.

If in a pinch, can easily bring that offline wallet online on Mycelium or Jaxx...don't need to download the blockchain to use.

To be even more safe, download the bitaddress.org website. Disable your computer from the internet. Run the address generation while your computer is offline.

BTC newb here.

After doing some research, I decided to use Electrum as my wallet and Coinbase as my exchange.

I want to buy and move BTCs from coinbase to my wallet to a poker site and vice versa.

If Coinbase is linked to my name and Bank account, can the transactions be traced back to me? From my understanding, you can just look at the blockchain ledger and follow the transaction numbers if one were so inclined.

What about BTC mixers/tumblers? Could that help?

Should I be using a blockchain wallet as well?

Every exchange prohibits coins from gambling sites but it seems like a lot of people are still able to get them converted by only using a blockchain wallet as an intermediary? Is this enough in the longrun?

I think poloniex is pretty good can lend there for return too, you should get a wallet if you dont want to be trascked just create new sending addreses and receiving addres

IF you use a blockchain wallet make sure you create a back up on usb everytime you create a new address. Probably should have 2 or 3 usb lol, and dont leave them all in 1 place if your house burns down you would be ****ed.

Paper wallets are pretty much relics to me at this point.

A hardware wallet is by far the safest option because the keys never leave the device and you are effectively impervious to all attacks over the Internet.

The next level id say are android and iOS wallets. Although there are hilariously evil exploits like one click roots and jail breaks out there, those attacks are highly targeted to important individuals. Use copay or mycelium on android/ios and you will be shielded my Trojans, keyloggers, malware and email/mitm hacks.

Don't use a desktop wallet or web wallet like electrum or bitgo unless it is paired with a hardware device like trezor.

Can you explain more? What are the risks of only using electrum?

Yeah, elite rigged money hasn't entered in yet and do you think they really come in at market price. Their about to leave stock market, would expect them to create some bearish news on btc and then pile in. My guess they create some bearish news in China Dec-January, would work perfect with whats going on with yuan.

I started a new thread about coinbase charging 1.5% before looking at existing threads .... Sorry .... I have a 15k Btc transfer coming in and opened a Coinbase acct. My question is am I going to pay 1.5% to receive the Btc and then again pay 1.5% when I decide to ship it to my bank . Iam going to hold the 15k for a few months/years as an investment but if Iget vigged a total of 3% this wont be worth it ....So how does Coinbase charge ??? I read and they say its FREE but then go on to talk about a CONVERSION FEE .I just want to know the facts before I tell my friend that I will accept the 15k he owes me in bTC ??? ........How much will I be charged by COINBASE In&Out ????...Thanks

If your friend is sending you btc, 0% to receive.

If your plan is told hold it for 3 years, don't hold it on coinbase, get your own wallet.

COinbase's wallet is free to use. Dont know about their trading fees or depositing/cashing out Fiat though

The only cost you may incur is depositing/withdrawing fiat currency.

Your own wallet has more. If coinbase gets hacked, you lose. If you are smart about it you can easily set up your own cold wallet that is basically unhackable

don't use blockchain.infos wallet. It lacks development and It's method of backup, & encryption and recovery is uncessarily complicated. Every now and then you see a guy on Reddit who is trying to recover an old blockchain wallet and all you can do is cringe. Their method sucks

Use copay Or mycelium

cool thanks - totally new to this
signed up for mycelium on ios

so then the path would be -- deposit money on circle - send it to mycelium somehow after figuring that out, then deposit on bovada/5dimes etc using mycelium.

Has anyone tried selling BTC for cash at a BTC ATM? I just found out my city has a few ATMS where you can sell BTC.

This seems like a great way to go right from BTC to cash for small amounts. You get to skip going through an exchange.

I'd be surprised if the ATM fees were less than the exchange.
